Hi - I received this coin in a mixed lot and was just looking to catalog it but I ran into a question... The NGC lists a Mintmark D L'An II Sol, without A.D. date ("1793") as "Rare" without a valuation and Numista lists it but indicates it may not exist. This is a worn coin so there is a possibility the A.D. date is worn away - but I can't seem to find any indication of it. Does anyone know anything about these coins and if there are any records of L'an II Mintmark D, undated coins ? I included a close up of the date area. If you think you see something that could be the date - please chime in! https://fr.numista.com/catalogue/pieces16453.html https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide...20.4-lan-ii-1793-94-cuid-1203783-duid-1257368 http://coinquest.com/cgi-bin/cq/coins?main_coin=3870
During the French Revolution, they did away with the church dating system and started a calendar where year one was the formation of the republic in 1792. So year 2 would be the second year of the republic, or 1793. Edited to say, on reading your post again I don't think I have aided in answering your question at all, as I'm not familiar with these at all, and don't know why there would be an AD date considering the time period... this is what happens when I drink and browse the forum...
lol Thank you FitzNigel! I did some more research and did find this French reference which I had to translate - I think I will need to try to find an expert in these... https://translate.google.com/transl...&description/Convention/index.htm&prev=search

Hi - thanks very much The variety I am looking at is this one- I expect the date is just worn away on my coin though. But always interesting to learn something new. (The date when there is under the mintmark.) https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide...20.4-lan-ii-1793-94-cuid-1203783-duid-1257368 France Sol KM# 620.4 LAN II (1793-94)D Rare SPECIFICATIONS Composition: Bronze DESIGN Obverse: Inscription within rectangle Reverse: Wreath hung around liberty cap at center of scales NOTES Note: Without A.D. date.
And this very well may be the case. I could try and explain what I mean by that but it would be much easier and save me a lot of writing to just post this link and let you read for yourself how such a thing can come to pass. So read on. http://www.coinweek.com/world-coins...rt-3-importance-primary-research-numismatics/
Thank you! I did not have an interest in gold ducats but I do now. I enjoyed that article At the bottom of the quoted passage in my reply (#3) there is this - which is probably the start of the trail if I want to pursue this further- The undated sol of Lyon (D) exists but is not indicated in the Gadoury, on the other hand there is a production figure of 19 650 ex. In the Breviary of JM Leconte. B. Poindessault reported two copies.
Glad you liked it Darek and I spent a lot of time writing that series of articles. But the primary point of part 3 that I wanted you to understand is that there are a lot of books, and or articles as well as coin catalogs, that contain bits and pieces of bad information. And once that bad info is written/recorded/reported once, just about every article, catalog, or book that is subsequently written will repeat that bad information. With the net result being that bad info is accepted as fact and accurate - when it isn't at all. And it is only with detailed and painstaking primary research that this bad info can be ferreted out, exposed, and corrected. All of that said, does the coin you posted about really exist ? Or is it one of those that never did really exist, but was mistakenly reported to exist by somebody who knows how long ago ? I don't know the answer, won't pretend to know the answer, for this one. But what I have found over the years both by teaching my students and by helping Darek write the books on ducats and all of the articles and presentations is that there is a lot of bad info out there. And it gets repeated over, and over, and over again. So that report by Numista that you mentioned, well it might just be true. But it will take some primary research to find the answer. Who knows, you might be the one who can do that
