This silver Japan coin has the denomination silver Isshugin which means "one shu of silver".

I've got this Shu coin labeled as 1853-1865. However, the Kaei character apparently represents the year 1848 of the Edo period (1603-1867).

Therefore I'll play this one as Japan 1848.

So cool! I haven't looked at those enough to know some of them could be dated so precisely.

Do you use the Hartill book, or are you going back further? I have a reprint of the Monroe book but it's got such an old fashioned writing style (and is a bit imperfect in reproduction) so it's a pain to slog through.

I don't have those books in my library & I do not read Japanese. To most japan questions, my answer would be "wakarimasen". :)

This shu was a souvenir from a Japan trip in the early 1980s. I traveled to Japan 7 times one year. Each time I would typically bring something "tourist-y" home like a watch, pearls, or coin. Someone at CT said this coin was 1848 but I keep it labeled 1853-1865.

Your turn to play a coin. I think everyone likes seeing your Japan material.

I like that one, a bit off center there!

    Okay, here's one I haven't played yet (I don't think).

Showa 22, 1947. Cool little error I picked up on eBay. Flew all the way from Japan with that little piece of paper tucked in place and I managed to knock it out after one photo.

Mexico, 1910. I know I've put it up somewhere on this site but didn't tag it for this thread.

This Thule Kap York trading post is located way up north.
Greenland 1910 Thule - Kap York
    Greenland 1910 Thule Kap York 25 Obv.jpg Greenland 1910 Thule Kap York 25 Rev.jpg

There was a trading station in Northwest Greenland founded by Knud Rasmussen in 1910. Rasmussen was a Danish polar explorer and anthropologist. I believe that He bought the schooner "Kap York" for the Thule station in 1913. According to Krause, the Thule Kap York money circulated from 1914 to 1937, but the all the minor coins bear the 1910 date of the founding year. The larger 5 & 10 Kroner denominations bear a 1932 date.

Sorry, that last one should have been a 1926. Let me correct it as I watch The Open golf from U.K.

US--1926 Seisquicentennial half dollar. One badly struck issue. 65 difficult to find. Never graded above 66.

One oddity: That's George Washington and Calvin Coolidge, who was president then and quite alive, going against law and/or tradition. About 850,000 of the 1 million mintage went back to the melting pot. Great history -- lousy coin.

Next: Any US or any 1926.

My other recent swap acquisition. :)

United States: "1837" Hard times token, C.D. Peacock Jewelers, Chicago, PCGS MS63 BN.

This is actually a ca. 1902 token struck for the 75th anniversary of the company and backdated to their founding in 1837. As a further tribute to that year, it was deliberately struck in the style of a Hard Times token of that earlier era, and is often cataloged with those because of its large cent size and "1837" date.

So the next player may post United States, 1837 or 1902, as they prefer.
