Very small Athena - owl coin from ancient Athens. It is called a hemiobol (half Obol).

    454-404 B.C.
    0.34 grams, 12 mm diameter

Back in the day, Athena's little owl(s) would travel around each evening & return to her each day with the news of the known world.

IMHO this is a very good fake. When you show it to experts, they say that it looks good until they weigh it & start reading the legends......
    Caracala Collage 1.jpg
It is supposed to be a Caracalla from 198-217 AD. It is not. It is a fake.

It weighs 5.15 grams which would be a double denarius. However, a double denarius would have an image of Caracala where he is wearing a radiant (spikey) crown.

It has the legend Cos II [Caracalla's second consulship] which would be 205 AD.

It also includes the legend TRP VI which would be 203 AD.

Which is it? Is it year 205 or 203?

Caracalla is depicted with a beard after 209. Prior to 209 he was depicted clean shaven. So this coin is dated after 209 right?

I almost forgot to mention that Caracalla was never minted with the reverse showing Caracalla standing & sacrificing over a tripod. That would have been some different Roman dude.

It's an enigma. Aside from being a complete fantasy, this is an extremely well made faux ancient POS. Caracalla was a bad boy that had his brother Geta killed. Caracalla was ordered killed by Macrinus in 217 AD.

Next theme is countermarked coin. Here is a 1848 Costa Rica countermark on Lima 2R:

The countermark made the coin legal tender in Costa Rica.

I don't have a redbook so have no idea what qualifies. Does this mean my coin nerd card gets revoked?

Been a while since I had a Crusader piece. I looked through my old pix. Last one I had was stolen from my antique mall booth several years back, and I have no pictures. Bummer. I could borrow a picture of a very similar coin, but what's the fun in that? I'll wait for somebody else to go on Crusade.

Many crusaders launched from Venice. This grosso is an example of 13th Century historic medieval Venetian coinage. At this time in history, the Muslims were in Palestine & Jerusalem and the crusaders mustered in Venice Italy.
