I had always thought the GSA Carson City Morgans a very popular choice for collecting. I was very surprised to find only 11 sets of these coins in the PCGS set registry "Morgan Dollars GSA Hoard Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1878-1891)". In the expanded set "Morgan Dollars GSA Hoard with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1878-1891)" there is only three sets. While a do understand that not everyone who collects registers their set with PCGS set registry, these numbers seem very low compared to other sets. I would love to hear from others if you have an opinion as to why these numbers are so low.
The bulk of the GSA Hoard Morgans that are graded were done so by NGC; they house more registry sets than does PCGS by a wide margin. https://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/public_sets.aspx?CategoryID=6&sets=us
Yup. This is one area where the market prefers NGC over PCGS. Mainly due to how NGC ribbon grades them So they will fit back in the box as opposed to how PCGS uses a mega brick scuba slab to fully encapsulate it.
Plus the long period where PCGS would only grade them by removing them and slabbing them before they switched to the big slab
Yep. Add me to that list. Absolutely hate their GSA slabs. Also speaking of GSAs it seems to me lately the demand has died down a bit but that may just be because I've personally shifted away from them once I finally found an 85 CC I loved. Have others noticed it's cooled off?
Yep that's what baseball was mentioning above. The regular PCGS slab will read "GSA" on it for those they cracked.
Of course. They're just in a stall pattern currently after years of premiums slowly inching up. Good time to buy imo. That said, stay away from the 82, 83, 84 years unless they are above ms65 or are PL/DMPL or are nicely toned
