Against my better judgement given what happened during the last NAC auction, I bid for and won one coin in the Naville auction.

It is a quinarius of Cato the Younger from the E.E. Clain Stefanelli Collection. I wanted this coin because I already have the Clain-Steffanelli Denarius of Cato the younger. I have always wanted the quinarius but never thought for a moment that I could get one which was from the same collection as the denarius.

I am very happy to have them both.

Please post your coins of Cato.

    M. Porcius Cato. Quinarius Africa 47-46, AR 13.5mm., 1.94g. Ivy-wreathed head of Liber r.; below, [M·CATO·PR]O·PR. Rev. Rev. Victory seated r., holding patera; in exergue, VICTRIX. Babelon Porcia 11. Sydenham 1054. Sear Imperators 47. RBW –. Crawford 462/2.

    Old cabinet tone, Very Fine.

    From the E.E. Clain-Stefanelli collection.

Here is the Denarius I already had.

    (18mm., 3.57g).

Obv: M CATO PRO PR Draped female bust r.

Rev: Victory seated r., holding patera.

    Babelon Porcia 9. Sydenham 1052. Sear Imperators 46. RBW –. Crawford 462/1c. SRCV 1 (2000) 1381.

From the E.E. Clain Stefanelli collection.

    Great Catos @Orfew !

Yeah, I watched the Green Hornet with Bruce Lee as KATO when I was a kid. Kato was MUCH better than Robin as a sidekick! :) Who wouldn't want Bruce Lee for your back?!

My collection lacks focus on the Republic...no Catos to share but I am enjoying the coins everyone is posting.

Just for clarification, those marked with "PRO PR" are attributed to Cato the Younger in 47-46 BC, while those without this are attributed to an uncertain relative (father? uncle?). Is that right?

That's right. There are other ways to distinguish these from their prototype, but the PR is probably the most straightforward. The earlier coins were patently struck by a relative, but the relationship is uncertain. Certainly not his father; Grueber suggests a cousin, but really we just don't know. The word du jour seems to be "namesake."

All nice coins, I surprised myself in this auction as well and will post when I receive them. What a great follow up to the earlier auction for you.

Very interesting coins, sometimes mistaken between the coins of Cato Uticensis and his predecessor from Rome.

Agreed. Liked him then. Probly some of his first gigs then. Same with Jackie Chan... I was watching him on Hong Kong TV before he was in the states
