Hello coin talk members. Just thought I would voince my opinion on something now that I was thinking about it. Ever notice how many apps there are out there? Seems like there is an app out there for just about everything. I was talking to a nice fellow by the name of @V. Kurt Bellman, he was talking about his Apple Watch heart monitor. After cracking a few jokes I started to think, being in the cointalk forum I asked myself..... why is there not an app out there for learning about coins, and variety lists like wexlers?! I mean even if you charge 1.99, i think that would be the very first app I ever purchased!!! My next question... is there anyone on this forum, that knows how to make an app on a cellphone??? If there is anyone who knows how to do this, I ask my next question... what are you waiting for? Let's get this going please
PCGS has Photograde, Price Guide, and CoinFacts apps which are helpful and include some of the major varieties. As far as all varieties, that would take a group to develop the app, with funding to do so, and then a trusted group to provide a database of pics and info. Basically would take 2 to 3 separate groups with a substantial amount of time and cost to the developer that they potentially may never recover and get past breakeven. Apps require constant maintenance and upgrades also. Small screens on devices are another hurdle. I've thought the same thing and that is what has led me to here as well as the main sites these folks use for identification. Plus, coin collections (especially expensive ones) are not something you always take with you or find while out and about since most good coins are locked up. More of a home thing and a large screen to look at helps, not so much of a mobile hobby. Who knows though, maybe someone is working on one right now.
I created my very own CoinTalk App! Here is a screenshot of it Haha.. It's actually a shortcut icon to the CoinTalk website
I am trying to teach myself app development for precisely the reason you state. The most difficult thing is getting access to coins for photos.
Good news: there is! It's called "Google Search". I do wonder if our good friends at Whitman will ever wake up and produce an app. I see that they have an online version of the Red Book. But as the previous poster has pointed out in the past, there are times when data service is not available, but a reference would still be useful...
I don't know if you want to define it as an app, but try this - http://www.varietyvista.com/CONECA Master Listings.htm And yeah I believe you can even access it on a cell phone.
I won't be satisfied with anything less than a native iOS app, but that is a pretty nice temporary substitute. I'm starting with iOS and then will be looking to port to Android. Which version? That's why it's iOS first.
That's an interesting idea, it could be a part of PCGS Photograde. I also think you should be able to submit PCGS and NGC coins online.
