Quiet ones better stay quiet

I bought a nice coin of the emperor Quietus. Who?

Well, in fact Titus Fulvius Iunius Quietus was the son of the army treasurer Macrian the Elder. Macrian bobbed up in 260 AD after his boss had been captured, the emperor Valerian. Ballista (or Callistus), the prefect of the Praetorian Guard, rallied a body of men and defeated the Great King Shapur, and together Macrian and Ballista revolted against Valerian's son Gallienus.

Macrian was too old and infirm to become emperor, and so the soldiers chose to make his sons Macrian junior and Quietus joint emperors. Macrian father and son marched northward, where they met a dire end. Quietus and Ballista stayed in the east, but not quietly, and in 261 they were finished off, too.

This is a tetradrachm of Alexandria, one in the well-known series of thick small bronze or potin coins. Year A = 260. 20-22 mm, 9.39 gr.
I trust I can put the tiny spots of verdigris away - quietly.

Great job @Pellinore ! Yeah, funky times then... they were lurking in the shadows to steal the emperorship!

    I have a Quietus:

Quietus has been on my list for ages as one of my few missing (reasonably obtainable) emperors. That's a nice score, assuming you can indeed deal with the apparent bronze disease.

Have you read Harry Sidebottom's series about Ballista? Lots of fun.:bookworm:

Very nice Quietus Pellinore!!! I like your Egypt type! Nice strong legends on yours. Too often the legends are not so good. Congrats on a great coin!!

Very nice Tet and I appreciate the brief and interesting historical reminder.

Coincidentally, I just placed a bid on an ANT of his....needing to fill that dang album hole with his name on it;)

Really nice tet and probably a very scarce one at that. I just pulled the trigger on a nice tet of carinus that I should get next week.

I had a Quietus Ant in my original 2007-08 collection, but can't find the pic of it now.

It was probably closest to Alegandron's example in terms of quality.

First signs of cleaning are looking pleasing. Also, some dirt came off to prove that it's potin, not bronze.

By the way, Quietus was the 80th of my ERIC II list of emperors (the one edited by @stevex6 and @Gil-galad). Only Domitia's more rare at 148. The commonest I don't have is Tiberius.
