They're only worth face value. When the State Quarter program began, the TV hucksters were quick to jump on the bandwagon with these sets. They used uncirculated coins that were of low MS grades, and the plating material, which was practically worthless, was used to mask dings & dents in the coins. The suckers who bought these sets didn't know squat about coin collecting and didn't know that the sets were nothing more than damaged coins after they were plated.

Basically the mint sold these to the public.with a nother face design.that's crazy.is that why they were in the trash.

The Mint didn't sell them like this. Scammers taking advantage of an uneducated public did!

Heck, I'll fish boxes of quarters out of the trash, too... depending on what they've landed on, or what's landed on them, of course. :)

Yeah, the company that plated and boxed these as "collectibles" turned them into something other than collectible coins. But they're still worth at least face value -- spend them, and someone receiving one in change might be drawn into the hobby. Donating to Goodwill would be even better.

People do still buy these sets; I see them selling (not just being listed) on eBay for 10 bucks or more a set. Donate them, and at least the next money spent on them will be going toward a good cause!

I bought a six piece US gold type set (Liberty) yesterday that the seller pulled out of the trash as a huge estate was being cleaned out.

There was an enormous amount of money in this estate including several POUNDS of gold coins in a clothe bag and several hundred in loose change. They threw out the change too.

    Some people.

The estate ended up valued at $47 million and this was 15-20 years ago.
