Just sorting through some stuff and want to know whether I should put these aside to re-evaluate later or put them in my "junk jar" now. The 1864 weighs 2.61g which is a little low. The diameter is 19mm but the coin is thinner than normal. Colors are a bit off since I had to play with lighting to get the best detail, especially on the Indian head...thanks for any feedback in advance!
Sounds good to me. My local coin shop owner told me the same thing about the Indian about 20 years ago and I put it away as a kid. He thought he saw something specific, but I cannot recall what it was. Here are a few more pics. I took over 100 pics just to get these sub-par ones Is it worth the gamble and sending in to get slabbed to find out exactly what it is? What is the best case scenario?
It looks as thought the 1864 may have been a ground/metal detector find at one time and then cleaned. There's really not enough left of it to say if it can be any sort of error unless you can see something specific in hand.
Thanks everyone for the input. I am very appreciative. I'm going to take one last stab at this to see if I can convince anyone that something may be up with this coin. Not disputing the erosion/corrosion. This thing is a mess, so I moved to the reverse for possible help. Can anyone see a 'S' or 'T' at 12 o'clock in this pic in the break in the wreath? Would not surprise me if it was a metal detector find of my Grandpa's - his old house (which I bought a few years back) had a huge garden and he would till up civil war artifacts and arrowheads with his tractor and we would metal detect there, once even finding a fist-sized cannonball - at least that's our story. Some of my collection also came from his Dad, who had a general store and was wise enough to save silver dollars and halves, which is how I got over 90% of my Morgans. Back to the coin, could it lose enough weight and thickness though to drop 0.5g if underground? And yes, the coin looks different in person. Also think I found the L in the ribbon which is a small consolation if nothing else. I won't bother any more with this coin unless someone sees something of interest.
The 1864 IHC has a variety of an "L" on the ribbon which also has a pointed bust. From what is visable I would say yours is without "L". And then the condision is so poor that it has no value left to it.
Would love to see some of your non coin finds with the metal detector in the "General Discussions" area. We have some detectorists here including myself.
