Today I was blessed several times over. For months I have waited for a Half Dollar bag to fill on a coin machine at one of my branches. It has been stuck at ~$580 and they would not sell it until it was full. I usually come back through that town on Wednesdays, my day to visit the field. I emailed the kind teller who said the bag was nearly full but lacked $20 from making a full $1000. I just so happened to have mega dump coins with me and quickly offered to fill the remaining $20 and buy the bag. She agreed and when I picked it up she said the bag had been on the machine since February, but that an elderly lady came in last week and dumped a bunch of half dollars she had at the house! She mentioned to me there were "some old ones in there". I said, "Great because I am building half dollar coin albums for my grandkids and will go through everyone of them. In fact, I collect all denominations." That prompted her to say the same lady dumped other denominations as well. I offered to buy those bags, but she said they had already sent the filled bags off via courier (rats!). Then she told me the same lady brought some CWR cent rolls in and somebody had written "Old Pennies" on the wrappers. She brought them out to show me and the wrappers looked really old and sure enough all had the same writing on them. I bought them all, $6 worth. I could see some Wheatie enders. I floated out of that branch on cloud nine and headed to my dump bank with my searched halves. Then I see a lady about to walk in ahead of me with a big zip lock full of rolled coins of various denominations. I told her I was a coin collector and would like to buy them from her. We made the transaction in the parking lot, $129 worth. She was going to cash them out for $1 bills for a garage sale this weekend. I doubt she has searched them. I will post some updates as I go through all these coins...
Can you take a picture of the bag/rolls and post them please. Give us a small taste of eye candy for us!
Okay, some pics and preliminary results. The first roll of "Old Pennies" was a solid roll of Wheaties from the 1940s & 1950's. More to come tomorrow!
I have a feeling their is alot of silver in that bag. I already see what looks like silver. I wish you luck @TexAg!
We had to wait for the bags to fill up to $1000, too, I know exactly how frustrating that is! Make sure you let us know what's in there. I'm seeing a lot of silver edges.
Quick update 1) "Old Pennies" rolls and a picture included. A total of 12 solid rolls of Wheaties except for 2 random Memorials. A spot check here and there looks like all are 1940s and 1950s, so I get to upgrade my coin albums, but no early versions. Still pretty cool as I have about doubled my Wheatie inventory. 2) Bag of Half Dollars is yielding some silvers and NIFCs. About halfway through the bag and have found (3) 64s & (25) 40%. Having fun with it, taking my time after having been on a long silver skunk streak! Also meticulously looking for upgrades for the Dansco albums I'm building for the grandkids. Will post a final update when I finish the bag. Thanks for the interest!
I only keep the wheat cents I need for my grandbabies coin books and regift most of the rest i find. Learned that from my grandbabies when i tried to give them others they didn't need. Informing me to share with others. My sons have raised great kids. Tex. You seem to be doing all the right things at the right time. Hope you get some standing liberty and b. Franklins. Good luck
Sounds like your grandkids will be decent citizens to society. That's great because most people are me me me these days.
The Assistant manager knows me so I received my usual $5.00 in pennies, The teller next to her said to me I have $18.50 in halves, want them??? of course I do she spread them out to count them and I saw nice bright silver. So at home I checked them, 5 clad halves, also got some Canadians some wheats and 1 IHC. In the pennies.
Okay, I got through the bag of halves: (6) 64s, (45) 40% ers, (2) 74-D DDOs, (1) 81-S, & (27) NIFCs. Phew, I needed that bag! Think I'll take a break and start on the next Dansco album. Good hunting everybody.....
Thanks P&G, here are some pictures of the (2) 1974-D DDOs. The second coin has a circular scratch, probably from a coin counting machine or MWR machine. Sorry, the pics aren't very good, I used my pocket digital camera. I need to get proper coin photography equipment. What photo equipment do you use?
