Vespasian has a unique series of Eastern denarii that promote the "Flavian Peace". I love these eastern coins and I'm always on the lookout for them. Some are common others quite rare. Let's see your coins of Peace. I'll start with 2 of mine... IMP CAESAR VESPAS AVG COS V TR P P P Laureate head right PACI AVGVSTAE Victory advancing right, holding wreath in extended right hand and palm across left shoulder, annulet at lower left, at lower right, star. Ephesus 74 AD. 3.01g RIC 1457 (C); RPC 853; RCV 2271 var IMP CAES VESPAS AVG Laureate head of Vespasian right PACI ORB TERR AVG Turreted and draped female bust right below, horizontal Φ 3.23g RIC 1407 (R); V1407, RPC 813 Rare
Nice coins Jay. I have been on the lookout for these types. I especially like the portrait of Vespasian on the second coin.
Awesome Flavian peace coins Jay! My first ever Roman coin. Great coins @Jay GT4. I'm away for a couple of weeks, but will need to check my Vespasian coins when I get home. But, man, those are marvelous coins.
WOW!! The OP coins and the following posts are just terrific!! Hmmm, I seem to lack any or find access to any but I'll keep looking....I must have one right?----or am I just confusing all those I lost on bid LOL
Lovely coin with the representation of PAX and very interesting, classic portraits on both. Very nice! I do not have any 'peace' coins for Vespasian, but here is a sestertius for Vitellius bearing PAX AUGUSTI (RIC 117). It is the most common reverse type for Vitellius' sestertii. I have not found a reference describing which specific events this coin alludes to, but it probably refers to a desire for enduring peace after the violence surrounding the murder of Galba (and the defeat of Otho), or possibly a desire to avert upcoming strife with Vespasian.
Great coins everyone! I'll keep this going... IMP CAES VESPAS AVG Laureate head of Vespasian right PACI AVGVSTAE Victory advancing left holding wreath and palm, tilted Φ before her right foot. Ephesus mint 69/70 AD 3.05g RIC 1406 (R ). BMCRE 435. RPC 812 (8 specimens cited).
Cool coins Jay! Welcome to CT. You made me realize that I do not have a provincial with Eirene, the Greek equivalent of Pax. Here is my Nike similar to your OP reverse. Macedonia, Stobi. Caracalla AE26 Caracalla AE26 of Stobi. A C M AVR ANTONINVS, laureate head right / MVNICI STOBE, Nike advancing right carrying palm branch & wreath.
