Wanted to get opinions on if I got a good deal. I paid $300. Thank you for your time and wisdom. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
What's going on at 12 o'clock. I don't know what you paid, but it's a beautiful coin from the pictures provided.
It appears to be a scratch. He advertised it as a "mark". I paid $300 I forgot to put it thanks. Lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Nice looking coin. You paid about half of what a 63 would sell for. That's a fair price because of the cleaning and the damage.
How do you know if a coin's been cleaned? Again thank for answering my post. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The hairline scratches on the fields are a dead giveaway. They only arise when the surface has been abraded by something scratchy like steel wool. UNLESS the scratches are raised up from the surface, which would indicate die polishing lines.
Keep in mind that we are looking at images that are a little out of focus. The coin is not the color I would expect for a proof of this age. As a normal there would be some toning. It just looks too bright. The obverse looks to have several hairlines. Maybe that's just the holder. Is it still in a holder? I'm not sure. Better images would be really cool.
The coin has continuous perpendicular hairlines easily seen on the obverse. The reverse is not at an angle to see anything. In fact, the coin does not even look like a proof in the images. Post better images when you get it. Looks like a scratch or die break next to the "D" on the reverse. If die break, I have not seen this on a proof.
It's still in the plastic case but if I take it out warranty is voided. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Here guys these are the ones he sent me. I can't take it out the plastic because that will break the seal and warranty will be voided. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Sorry but none of your images so far are going to get you good answers. I guess it's a proof. Do you think it's a proof? Mirror fields?
Type One reverse, noted by the width of the A in STATES, one of the two reverse types used with 1875 Proofs. In the final seller pic, one can see a distinct known pickup for this reverse on the (viewer's) left side of the shield. A little further research indicates two distinctly different date locations - therefore two obverse dies - associated with this reverse, and the coin here seems to match one of those date locations. Therefore I'm cautiously optimistic regarding the authenticity of this example of one of the rarest Proofs in the series, although the surfaces seem to have been scrubbed.
At least now it looks like an impaired Proof. So, if you take it out of the holder you cannot return it. I understand that from a dealer's point of view BUT... Anyway, as long as you know you bought a cleaned and damaged coin for less than $300, you have all the info you need for this purchase. SuperDave said: "...one can see a distinct known pickup for this reverse on the (viewer's) left side of the shield." It is the long "dash" thru the left side of the shield outline and just under the horizontal stripes.
I'd personally return it, buying problem coins generally never works out in your favor unless you're getting them super cheap. I'd also return it simply because the dealer won't let me look at the coin truly in hand or I lose my return privilege. It's not like you're taking it out a slab and especially with proofs a lot of hair lines can be hidden when trying to view the coin through the plastic of a flip. Yes the mintage was small but it's a coin that is readily available so it's not like you won't be able to find another one with patience.
I appreciate y'all advice. I'm returning it. Thank you very much for your opinions. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I agree Insider I sent it back for a refund. Thanks for the advice. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
