http://www.ebay.com/itm/1877-Indian...872124?hash=item569d56643c:g:XJ0AAOSwWdZZYPgH Yes, I know it's pretty beat up from the bad pictures, but I would not expect such an in-demand key date to be listed at $130. Really, exactly how hard has the coin market tanked? I know that you should never, ever buy a key date raw, especially from pictures like these, but it would seem pretty hard to fake this level of wear. I don't plan to buy it, but what do you think of it? Is there any chance it could be a real 1877 IHC? The seller has 100% feedback and offers 14-day returns.
Even if real, it's not worth $130. This is more than wear. It's smashed, damaged to the point of having very little value.
To each their own...I personally wouldn't buy any coin no matter what in a condition less than what I would be happy with which would be vf or above. I have passed on several variety coins that were extremely rare due to damage or conditions. I don't understand how something like pictures in the op could add to one's collection . I would rather use the $130 towards a specimen that would add value ,then rarity at a cost of major damage or condition.
Probably real but impossible to tell with those pics. It would be worth it to the person who buys it.
FR2 in a slab is a >$200 coin. I wouldn't touch this one with stolen money, but in truth the price wasn't an order of magnitude away from reality.
It appears to have sold, so here's the seller's pictures for posterity's sake in case someone comes across this thread five years from now. I agree that'd I'd pass, especially since the pictures are poor and you can't really tell what the damage is.... that said, I think I can make out a pretty large gouge on the obverse.
It doesn't appear to be quite round, as if part of it was squished and flattened making it a little oval.
The only value it would have to me would be in a Dansco, and if it's not even round, then it won't fit, so I wouldn't want it.
That's why I say "in-demand" key date. If there were less demand these coins would go for less than $50. That's because they aren't rare. However, that is for another thread.
