Every now and then I take bills out if my collection that don't need to be there. I did my biggest purge ever. I used to try to assemble a from circulation date and district set, but I realized it was basically pointless since these are all circulation finds and don't have any collector value. So now I'm a full $1,000 richer! Yahoo
Sometimes it's good to go through and purge items that one no longer wants in their collection. In your case, you can consider it a saving plan for a future purchase. Congrats!
I'm about ready to purge my Series 1934 notes - kept them for emergency money for a long time but haven't used them and they just sit. Mostly $100s and $50s.
I think I'll pursue some more world banknotes by ABNC. I have a lot already, but there's some more expensive ones I could never afford before... But now I can..
The oldest thing I've ever spent was I believe a Buffalo nickel or maybe an Indian cent. Same size and color as modern counterparts so didn't get a second glance.
I'm sure everyone here would be happy to accept it at double its face value. We're just that sort of generous crowd.
I'm trying to get Kennedy halves back in circulation and two clerks, neither were teenagers or college kids, but one asked outright "What is that?" and the other asked: "Are these dollars?"
Ha! I paid with halves for some tacos or something and the teenage girl cashier was like "are these quarters...?"
FWIW, teens likely wouldn't question the coins. They deal a lot in cash, so they likely know what the different denominations are.
I find I get questioned most by younger white folks. I never EVER get a second glance from any non-white person, as weird as that sounds. Mexican restaurant cashiers, Indian gas station guys, eastern European garage sale buyers... No problem there. I was at a soda shop and the low-20s white male cashier asked his loe-20s white female coworker "can we take 2's" She replied "I don't think so, ask if he [me] has anything else"
