I know a lot of people are superstitious about posting coins you don't have in hand. Nomos AG ended today and I didn't win the only one I bid on. The winner had Vespasian as part of his screen name so he was more dedicated than I. So, if you want, post any wins or losses if you bid today. Here's the one that got away And this description from a different auction of the same coin type: Vespasian. 69-79 AD. Denarius, 2.97g (12h). Antioch, 72 AD. Obv: [IMP CAESAR VESPA] - SIANVS AVG Head laureate left. Rx: VICTORIA - AVG Victory standing right on globe, holding wreath before her and palm over shoulder. RIC 1547 (R2). RPC 1921 (2 spec.). BM 498. Cohen 588 (Elberling, 2 Fr.). Portrait in high relief. About EF Ex Harry N. Sneh Collection, purchased from Sayles & Lavender, c. 2008 The only bust left on an Antioch denarius; otherwise this portrait appears only on aurei, with a legend ending COS IIII (RIC 1548-1552). The Victory on globe type too appears only here on the aurei and denarii of Vespasian and Titus at Antioch. Very rare, apparently only the fourth recorded specimen of this denarius. The first was reported by Elberling in 1863, whence Cohen took it over in the first volume of his second edition (1880). The specimen acquired by the BM from Feuardent in 1925 was that same Elberling coin, as Elbering`s picture proves. A second specimen is in Vienna, according to RPC and RIC; and a third was in Gorny & Mosch 117, 2002, lot 500, whence it was acquired by A. Lynn and then resold in Helios 4, 2009, lot 292. There are no other specimens in CoinArchives Pro, Windwinds, CNG Research, or Berk photofile. The three illustrated specimens (ours, BM ex Elberling, Gorny & Mosch ) appear to all come from the same obverse die, but are from three different reverse dies
I wasn't the winner . I didn't want to pay as much as it ended up going for. 440 CHF + 20% + shipping from Switzerland
That's a very interesting Vespasian. I wonder if @David Atherton won it? Today's Obolos auction (the "lesser" brand for Nomos AG) didn't have much that spoke to me (in part because some recent and upcoming auctions have taken my budget) but I did find one to bid on. I've been wanting a nice Fallen Horseman--the hazards of too much CoinTalk browsing. @randygeki points out good candidates and today I actually bid on one, fully intending to win. I lost to a mail bidder despite a few extra "anger" bids in the final seconds Here's the one that got away:
Ah, I was wondering who was driving the price on that one so high during the last few moments, haha! I was looking at that one too. Really wanted it, but not as much as that other guy. Maybe next time!
My finger was literally coming down to post a decent bid on this coin when the bid from Vespasian registered (within the last couple seconds). Although my bid was higher than @H8_modern I decided not to get into a bidding war with the one who ended up the high bidder. He can be rather determined! This is a highly desirable type for those who care! PS. I think the high bid was a bargain.
I won two and lost two today. I put in a low bid on this one just to see so I'm not surprised I lost. I was intending to make a serious run at this Kassander for my Diadochi collection but got distracted this morning and missed the first part of the auction it's a neat overstrike too. The two I won will each get a write up so I won't bore you with them twice Sorry to see that you missed on that cool Vespasian @H8_modern
Guilty as charged. I've been waiting for that type to come along in decent shape for quite sometime. I agree with @Nemo , even at my winning bid it was a bargain! Sorry to anyone I outbid.
Congrats David. A really excellent addition. I saw this one and liked it a lot too. Was it just me or were there a lot of really nice LRB coins in this auction?
There did seem to be some nice LRBs but I don't know how that segment compared to other typical auctions.
I really enjoy Alan Walker's mini write-ups about the auction highlights that get sent via e-mail, but there was nothing very compelling for me this time around. I did look through the catalog several times and that Vespasian really stood out... congrats to @David Atherton for the win! I liked @Curtisimo's AtG bronze too. Sorry you missed out on your lot, @TIF... it's an exceptional example, but my sense is that there must be at least one other Falling Horseman out there with your name on it .
I also admired and considered trying for that Vespasian when the auction posted . Clearly it was meant for a dedicated specialist though. I'm glad you got it, @David Atherton Finding one might be easier if I actually browsed that far into the auctions . There are just so many auctions and so little time though! I'm trusting Randy to point out good candidates (thanks, bud!)
Snatched that at the last few seconds, aka. Clio style , sorry about that @Curtisimo . Seems that there are too many common interests among Cointalk members (probably due to the fact that each of influence other members in terms of coin selections)...
Haha I got Clio'ed by @Quant.Geek No worries and I am glad that it is going to a good home with a CT friend. This was my 4th target of 4 so I wasn't too bummed. Any of my CT friends are welcome to PM me to avoid a bidding war on mutual targets if need be. We can settle it with a good old fashioned game of rock-paper-scissors ...or perhaps I can cry and get my way??
Funny thing was that I was tempted by the Kassander one too, but ended up passing (bought several of the other Macedonian bronze coins though) as I needed the funds for this as I overextended a bit during the auction . It is a nice upgrade to one I bought a few years ago that was a bit tattered...
LOL, it is EASY: just stay away from any future coins that I am going after! I have NO clue what those future coins may be, but just don't go after them! Purdy simple rule...
