It's kind of tough advising someone how to get into this hobby (at least for me). I second the idea of going through a Red Book to see what coins really turn you on. Welcome to CT!
I just thought of a tip: Be very cautious about getting rid of any really neat coins. I still regret selling off a bunch of quite old and rare coins some years ago, and maybe that is what got me started collecting again. I gave away a quart jar full of pocket change from 30+ countries to the kid across the street. Hope he liked and enjoyed having them. I also gave away about 100 brass trade tokens I dug up in Maryland when I was a kid. Never did find out what those "J.K.S." tokens were.
coin hunting was good while back , this days you find nothing (in majority) , but its a good way 2 learn things..
Welcome to CT, I started this Hobby with the intent just to kill some time since I have retired and my wife still works. But for me personally The Hunt is the fun part everytime I open that new role the possibilities are Unlimited. Although you will find that you will go through thousands and thousands of coins before you actually might find an error coin. I never had any intentions in collecting coins but now I find myself collecting coins I'm even looking on eBay to buy coins that I don't have for my books. The things that I have learned on here besides things to look for books and loops and cameras those are the most important things when posting on coin talk. Warning just beware it will become very very addictive if you're married your wife will say you spend more time doing that then you do spending with her. Good luck to you and best wishes. PS. Be sure to crop your pictures and select full image if not they will let you know to do that LOL.
And that's why theaters have to pay people to come sit through a movie or a play, instead of the other way around.
My tip to you is to definitely build relationships withthe tellers at the banks. They can be helpful allies in the search for silver/oddities. Just the other day the teller gave me a couple of silver dimes she found! I think halves are the most fun to search and might be easiest for a newbie (because the coins are bigger and it would be potentially easier to see errors). The problem with halves is either you have to get lucky and the bank just has them, or order a 500 dollar box. In my experience I get more silver halves in CWR (customer wrapped rolls). It wouldn't hurt to whenever you go to the bank, ask for halves. They usually only have a couple rolls. Whatever you choose to do, good luck!
Welcome to CT @Tyler Jones ! The other guys pretty much covered the bases, less the person who purposely came to a CRH thread to bash CRH...I digress. If you're hunting for silver boxes of halves is the way to go. I usually ask the tellers if they have any when I'm swapping rolls and straps, and I'd say a little less than half of the times they say yes...there's silver in there. That's just a supplement for my collecting tho...I started the Jefferson nickels books from Whitman a few months back and enjoy filling them from the wild. There are lots of ways to enjoy CRH so have fun finding yours! And the best parts about it...they're collectibles at face value, you can always get more to go through and you can always add or switch up your game plan...it's your game. Again welcome and enjoy! I look forward to seeing some of your finds on here!
If you're interested in learning about what to look for when hunting nickels, take a look at this video I made on it.
First, ignore the negative nellies! Second, determine why you are roll searching; If it's Silver, then Half Dollars will be your target. If It is Error, Collection, or other I'll default to others who search for those reasons and strategies to use there. Silver searching, the reason Half Dollars is they are rarely if every circulated any longer. I know others find Silver quarters and dimes, but it seems to be rarer. To BMann's comments, he is right it takes patience and a lot of coins, there are some strategies to increase your chances and decrease your gas expense. Also, consider your location, are you in a rural area, near a major city, mid-sized city, Area of the country (East, West, etc) etc. It makes a difference. It you want PM me and I'll send you some more detailed strategies that I have used over the last 6 years.
Cultivate good relations with your tellers. Some of our best finds came from tellers. They'll spot for you, and even call you when something good comes in. Another tip, they like donuts. Finally, don't play the horses.
Agreed. Also add Fererro Rocher or any chocolate for that matter. It has turned some of the most emotionless tellers into smiling bubbly girls that would love to help you with your treasure hunt.
