From a bulk lot with an average price per coin--including buyer's commission and shipping--of less than $9.00. Post your Valerian I coins, especially your bargain ones! Valerian I, AD 253-260 Roman billon antoninianus; 3.29 g, 20.2 mm Rome, AD 257 Obv: IMP C P LIC VALERIANVS P F AVG, radiate, draped bust, right Rev: P M TR P V COS IIII P P, emperor seated left, holding globe and scepter Refs: RIC 142c; Cohen 166; RCV 9961; Hunter p. xxxiv
Kinda hard to beat that for nine bucks! This was the Valerian I in my old novice collection. 'Tis, I believe, the only coin of his I've had.
Gotta love those bulk lots . This one came from a group lot that I probably overpaid for ($24 per coin shipped), but it's one of my nicer Valerians. VALERIAN Billon Antoninianus. 3.26g, 22.4mm. Rome mint, AD 254. RIC V 125; MIR 36, 30d; RSC 230. O: IMP C P LIC VALERIANVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. R: VICTORIA AVGG, Victory standing left, holding palm frond and wreath.
Can't beat that for $9 Roman Collector, nice coin, and fantastic portrait on your's zumbly. I wouldn't say my only Valerian was a bargain, but I don't think I would get any others any cheaper as a reasonably rare coin, Mopsus, Turkey circa 260 AD.
Good catch at 9 bucks @Roman Collector, unbeatable @zumbly yours has a great style on the portrait, I would spend 20 € any day for it. An as of his in good condition has to be considered a bargain, whatever the price : Valerian, As Rome mint, AD 255-258 IMP C P LIC VALERIANVS P F AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right IOVI CONSERVATORI, Jupiter standing left, holding thunderbolt and scepter. S - C in field 10.0 gr Ref : RCV # 10032, Cohen # 96 Q
gogili's "Restorer of the Human Race" is one of my favorites but from the billon period where it can be hard to find with good surfaces.
Curse of the Mummy. Not $9 but cheap for a mummy coin in my opinion. Cilicia, Anemorion, Valerian, 253-268 AD (dated ЄΤΓ, year 3), AE29, 11.87g Obv: ΑΥ Κ ΠΟ ΛΙ ΟΥΑΛΕΡΙΑΝΟΝ; laureate, draped & cuirassed bust right Rev: ЄΤΓ ΑΝΕ ΝΟΥΡΙΕΩΝ; Mummy shaped cult statue of Artemis facing holding branches, at her feet, stag Ref: Lindgren III 798 Clark's Ancient Coins, 2004, lot 641, (Lovette collection; ex Harlan J Berk, June 1986, lot 365)
Great Valerian @Roman Collector , and what a great price! I rarely buy lots, and they have been Republican Denarii. I have a couple Valarians: RI Valerian I 253-260 CE AR Ant Felicitas stndg Caduceus and Cornucopia RI Valerian I 253-260 CE AE 20mm Alexandria Troas mint Horse Grazing
Nice find for the price. This was $8 total years ago. Valerian I (253 - 260 A.D.) AR Antoninianus O: VALERIANVS P F AVG - Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Valerian I. that is a "WOW" coin also. i've never ever seen such a reverse on a coin! very very nice!..i.e. wrap it up, i'll take it!
I only have 2 Varlerians, but I always keep an eye out for cheap ones that have a decent appearance. So many of them have problems, bad metal, crude strike, etc. I got this one for $15 on eBay (a "best offer" deal): Valerian I (256-258 A.D.) IMP C P LIC VALERIANVS P F AVG, Radiate bust right / PIETAS AVGG - Valerian and Gallienus facing each other sacrificing over altar between, one holding an eagle-tipped scepter, the other a parazonium. SR-9955; RIC 284
Wow, some awesome coins in this thread, either for rarity (Q's as, AA's Mopsus, gogili #1, Ed's), beauty (zumbly's, Ed's), or bargainness (OP, Mat's, and Mike's). My best bargain ($33): And not such a bargain, but would be my entry into a beauty contest; I bought it for the portrait:
