One of the top Antioch tets. I wanted was an Otacilia Severa. Finally got one for below $30, which is lower then she normally goes for. The coin is bright & over cleaned but honestly, could care less. Decent coin overwise and within my price range and no BD. Lastly, I am not sure if it's attributed correctly due to the legends. I am hoping it is. I only found about 2 with this obverse/reverse combo. Otacilia Severa (244 - 249 A.D.) BI Tetradrachm O: MAP ΩTAKIΛ CEOYHPAN CEB. Diademed and draped bust to right on crescent. R: ΔHMAPX EΞ OYCIAC YΠATO A, SC below, eagle on palm left, tail felt, wings spread, holding wreath in beak. Antioch Mint, 245 A.D. 11.34g 25mm McAlee 1088; Prieur 342.
Great addition. And it looks right. She was my first empress and one of my first ancients. This one has the double cornacopiae reverse which for her coins I haven't seen a whole lot of. I need to attempt a better pic though Congrats
Here's my Antiochene tet of Oticilia: Otacilia Severa, 244-249 Roman provincial AR tetradrachm; 12.23 g; 25.1 mm Syria, Seleucis & Pieria, Antioch, AD 245 Obv: ΜΑΡ ΟΤΑΚΙΛ CΕΟΥΗΡΑ CΕΒ, diademed and draped bust, right. Rev: ΔΗΜΑΡΧ ΕΞΟΥCΙΑC ΥΠΑΤΟ Α, eagle on palm, left, tail right, SC in exergue. Refs: McAlee 1088; Prieur 341; BMC 541 Yep. Yours is Prieur 342, body twisted such that its tail would face left were it visible, whereas mine is Prieur 341, body twisted such that its tale would face right were it visible. See: 341, like mine: 342, like yours:
Whats that book you got there? Im new to ancients sorta and that looks useful, especially for variety geeks like myself.
Thanks guys. "Syro-Phoenician Tetradrachms and Their Fractions From 57 BC to AD 253" by Michel Prieur I don't have it due to costing $100+ I haven't been lucky enough to find it cheaper.
Here is my bronze Otacilia Severa from Antioch. Despite the fair degree of wear it still presents well over all. It must have looked amazing when in mint condition.
