Why don't TPGs state their grade opinion on coins that they won't cross?

One annoying thing about submitting coins for crossover grading is that if the coin does not cross, you're not told what grade they think it is. I can see several reasons why they do this. 1. You may be more likely to submit it again for crossing at the same or lower grade. 2. They don't want their statement of grade to become a second grade opinion on a coin still in the other company's holder. For example, if you submitted a NGC MS64 to PCGS and you have a document from them that states they grade it MS63+, then in future sales, the coin might be advertised as PCGS MS63+ / NGC MS64.

I can see their point. However, it seems like I'm not getting the complete information that I paid for. They've graded it, but will only say the grade is less than what is on the current holder.

Arggh! You've graded it, so tell me the grade!!

And it's irritating to play the resubmission game.

One way they could do this without creating a written or digital record that could be made public is to provide a unique, temporary access code on the paperwork returned with the coin. Then via phone only for 10 days, you dial them, punch in the code and hear a grade. Would be hard to link the grade back to the coin in public. Then you get 60 days to return the coin and paperwork and can have it crossed (for a fee, of course) to the grade you heard.

When grading at shows, they could simply tell you the grade in person.

They WILL tell you the grade. It's called "cross at any grade".

I know this is a sore subject for you cal. Keep on truckin' though. 20th time is usually the charm lol.

You bring up good points. I think it's because a) it's only the opinion of 2-3 graders and b) they don't want you think that's the end all be all. Its bad business to make a customer think a coin will not cross or upgrade if they send it in again, or again or again.

This. Also I'd like to add that they also don't tell you the reason it didn't cross, which is sometimes the case, (i.e. cleaning, artificial toning, etc). I sent in a rainbow toned buffalo 5c a few times last year. The last time I wrote, "cross at any grade." They sent it back in the NGC holder. So I assume they think it's artificial...

Sometimes they do, or the 2x2 ends up coming back with the coin by mistake telling you what details designation they would give it
