My experience with Claudius provincials has not been so good. Antioch was not at a high point in their quality of workmanship. Also, I am not seeing where you have any right to complain about 'miserable ants' from Claudius. I see your miserable and raise you a pathetic (flipover double strike): Not long after Aurelian came to power, he cleaned up the act at the mint and reformed the coinage. Except for the few coins of Quintillus, Claudius was the last of the old way of doing things and doing them poorly. If you look very hard, you might find half decent coins of Quintillus. There are even some decent Claudius dies and some well struck Claudius ants but getting an acceptable degree of both both on one coin takes some looking.
LOL, naw, REAL togetherness would be the 18 month old pushing her foot into my side, grunting, then ripping a nasty one! I was spared that! LOL!!!
Wow! Your Antioch is almost barbaric in style. I guess it's indicative of the general chaos of the times!
Chaos is more fun when the times are not yours. You can tell a lot about the state of civilization by the coins. This is the Antioch in Pisidia.
Wonderful posts!!! Naturally, I absolutely LOVE Greg's OP I'll contribute a Tet and an ANT of Claudius II.....
Greg, you get some of the best coins! The radiate lion is rather awesome!!! Just saying. Also like the style and heft of the coin. Here is a not half bad Ant of Claudius II :
Great provincial, I like it. He does have nice coins with decent portraits. They're all not scrappy. Claudius II (268 - 270 A.D.) I've got a mediocre Quintillus, a bit embarrasing to post but maybe I'll take a photo of it later today and add to the thread.
I have a Quintillus... Got a big-as goober in his hair... RI Quintillus 270 CE Ant - Rome mint - Radiate-Victoria RIC Vi 33
What I have is not great, but the portraits are o.k. An Alexandrian tetradrachm of Claudius II, year gamma = 3 = 270, and a mistreated Quintillus antoninianus, but I like Quintillus' head.
That is a very nice (and unusual) style portrait of Quintillus. Resembles this one from Siscia quite closely... and also Willem Dafoe.
