Not sure what caused the scalloping out of metal on the obverse of this 1976-D Kennedy. Any ideas? Thanks.

    A midget karate punched it?

Be nice to see more shots of it from different angles to get a better feel.

It might be due to a strikethrough. Grease built up in the shallow recesses of the obverse may have fallen away and then impressed into the coin. I've seen this happen on Lincoln cents, so why wouldn't it be possible on a half dollar?

If that isn't PMD likely inflicted with some wooden shape perhaps covered with glove leather, it is an epic strike through and the raised lines going through it diagonally seem to say something about how. It is hard to see if they break at the start of the depressions.

Any hinkeys on the reverse? Nope, nothing that stands out....

No hinkeys or anything odd I can tell on the reverse. It looks totally unaffected IMO. Being new to this topic, I had to take a detour and read about strike throughs - interesting!

Thanks for the input OF & Chris! Will tag and bag it as a likely strike through.

with no reverse damage, it could be a struck thru....

IMHO, I think it may be a strike thru! Would any of you care to guess the four reasons why I think so?
