WOW @David Atherton I REALLY like your Quinarius! I enjoy collecting that denom. I have none of this denomination. I have wanted a CATO but have not pull the trigger on any. Great OP coin! Congrats! And I like all the other too!
Quinarii continued to primarily, pretty much exclusively, feature Victory on their reverses through the lifetime of the quinarius as a circulating coin - 2nd-early 3rd century before Gresham ruled them out. Trajan, AR Quinarius. 15mm, 1.74g, 7h. Mint of Rome, 112-14 AD. Obv: IMP TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P COS VI P P laureate bust right, drapery on far shoulder Rx: SPQR OPTIMO PRINCIPI Victory walking right holding wreath and palm-branch RIC II 281, RSC 433, Cf. SRCV 3175. Even the hemidrachms of Caesarea (Cappadocia) had the same Victory right holding wreath and palm reverse device. Hadrian's are easier found than his Imperial quinarii: Cappadocia, Caesarea, Hadrian, 117-138 AD. AR Hemidrachm; dated 121/2 AD. 14.5mm, 1.62g, 1h. Obv: AYTO KAIC TΡAI AΔPIANOC CЄBACT laureate draped and cuirassed bust of Hadrian right Rx:date, ЄT Є (= yr 5 = 121/2 AD.) in field to right of Nike advancing right holding garlanded wreath and palm-branch Cf. Thank you. Unfortunately I did a poor job shooting it. Will pull it out sometime and try a better pic.
OMGosh! I totally missed that in your profile! Happy Birthday Mr. @David Atherton ! Kindest Regards, and thank you for your thread contributions! Brian
I wrote a web page on the quinarius denomination: http://augustuscoins.com/ed/quinarius/ which has this Domitian piece on it: Domitian. 15 mm. CAESAR DIVI F DOMITIANVS COS VII counterclockwise from 5:00 VICTORIA AVGVST counterclockwisse from 11:30 Victory seated left holding wreat and palm. Sear 2646. RIC 53 (under Titus) "AD 80 and later". "DIVI" was after the deification of this father, Vespasian. BMC (Titus) 104A. RIC 52. King, Domitian Caesar 10.
Thank you! I printed it from your original posting... it is still by my bed (yes, I read it all... Quinarius collector myself!)
