The condition of this coin is not great but in my short time collecting ancients I have never seen one for sale. For $100 US I thought it was OK for a coin that is seldom seen. Vespasian AR Denarius 70 AD Ephesus mint Obv. IMP CAESAR VESPAS AVG COS II TR PPP Rev. PACI ORB TERR AVG with turreted and draped female bust right It's either RIC-1413 or RIC-1422 depending on the mintmark which I can not make out from the sellers pictures. I hope I can see it once I have the coin in hand. Either way RIC lists it as R.
Very nice !!!! I went to acsearch and from the link below you can see others of the type...and the hammer prices! I think you did purchase it at a very fair price https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?term=vespasian paci orb&category=1-2&en=1&de=1&fr=1&it=1&es=1&ot=1&images=1¤cy=usd&th
It seems in all the examples I could find; the female bust seems to share Flavian characteristics. Unfortunate there isn't any way to identify her. @David Atherton any guesses on her identity? I'm sure you can speak to the rarity as well.
The woman on the reverse has been attributed as Cybele or Tyche, depending on the reference cited. Both deities wear mural crowns, so it is difficult to tell.
A nice example of a fairly scarce type! I believe when it was first listed I was able to reverse die match it with another coin having a BY mint mark - so it should be RIC 1422 (R).
