On this 1922-P Peace dollar, the reeding creeps up onto the rim of the coin, and you can see the reeding twice. Is it some sort of collar error? It's as if it was reeded twice. The edge shows reeding like any other Peace dollar. Also, this specific Peace dollar appears to have two extra, small leaves right above the right talon. Thanks in advance!
Collar clash. The die got misaligned enough for the rim gutter to have clashed against the top of the collar. Seems counterintuitive, and it's admittedly a pretty lucky blow to get the rim gutter to impact against something else, but the evidence is there. Have a look at a collar-clashed die at Error-Ref: http://www.error-ref.com/collar-clash/
Look at VAM-38 & 38A at VAMworld. 1922-P has a number of collar-clashed VAMs, but only one with the clash so far up the right edge. There's a "killer" pickup die chip on the obverse which ought to define it, and some doubling on the leaves as you mentioned. However, the example shown there seems to have the clash rotated a little further (counterclockwise) up the rim, which makes yours worth looking into further. But check for the 38 obverse first.
VAM 38A does seem to match up, or at least it's the best candidate among all of the collar clash VAMs (I counted 14 varieties). I do see a number of doubling in the leaves, as circled in red below. But, those seem to be on different leaves or on different parts of the same leaves. Most notably, there appear to be extra stems on some of the red-circled leaves. As for the nose, it looks to have MD on the right side. The nostril area does seem to have some doubling. Overall, VAM 38A is definitely the closest one, but the doubling on the leaves looks a little different so I'm not 100% sure. Maybe it's a new VAM (??). From the VAMWorld site: Nostril:
Interesting, and still intriguing. For the record, circled in red is the die chip I was referring to:
@SuperDave if I ever end back up in DC, I'm inviting you over to sit down and look at all my Morgans and Peace Dollars for VAM attributions. Beer/Pizza/whatever you're eating/drinking is on me.
Do you think that they match? The pic they show almost looks circular but I also definitely see a dash-like chip, too.
