Well, everything in life can't be spade coins, whu zhu coins, cash coins, or coins of that most awesome of Chinese Emperors, Wang Mang!!! So here is a small detour. This is a rather common RR denarius, but it's been in my list of coins to get for 2 years. I could never find the right one at the right price (below $100). I finally found one I could live with for a $100 note, with enough spare change back to get lunch. In other words, below my target price. What do you think of these anonimous beauties? I've personally always loved the way the horses appear in the quadriga. A little off center, but nothing I can't live with, and nice old toning. ROMAN REPUBLIC. Anonymous. AR Denarius Rome Mint, 86 BCE. Obv.: Laureate head of Apollo right; thunderbolt below. Rev.: Jupiter driving galloping quadriga right, hurling thunderbolt and holding reins. Reference: Crawford 350A/2
Nice, but I'm not sure about it being anonymous. It looks suspiciously close to this RR: C. GARGONIUS, M. VERGILIUS, AND OGULNIUS, ROMAN REPUBLIC AR Denarius OBVERSE: Laureate head of Apollo right, thunderbolt below REVERSE: Jupiter in quadriga right Struck at Rome 86 BC 3.86g, 19mm Cr350/2
nice detour! that pretty much describes my entire collection...i love to mix it up. this year i've been pretty disciplined, if you can say "focusing" on roman ancient coins in general disciplined. here is my only ancient detour so far this year.... LESBOS, 5th century BC. 1/24 stater. O: Confronted boars' heads R: Quadripartite incuse square, divided diagonally. HGC 6, 1071. VF. 7 mm, 0.7 g. 2018 is will be "greek" year.
@Bing , you are wrong and right at the same time. It is anonimous in the sense that it has no legend with the name of the coiners, but it is a close match to a similar issue that was struck at the same time by C. Gargonius, M. Vergilius, and Ogulnus. The difference is that one issue has legends on the reverse, and the other is blank with no coiners identified. It is impossible to tell why that is the case, but many numismatists consider both types to be related to each other.
Great coin @Sallent , the detail is wonderful. I picked up one as well a while back and to date it is my only RR coin. Roman Republic AR Denarius 86 BC OBVERSE: Laureate head of Apollo right, thunderbolt below REVERSE: Jupiter in quadriga right 18.6 mm 4.147g Crawford 350a/2
Nice diversion into the Republic. I have a couple of those: RR Anon 86 BCE AR Den Apollo Jupiter Quad Sear 266 Craw 350A-2
