Ups, I had a "fat finger" at my first live auction and won this coin: AVTOK K M ANT ΓOPΔIANOC CЄB / ΔHMAPX ЄΞ VΠA TO B Radiate, cuirassed bust of Gordianus III left, both pteryges visible / Eagle standing facing, head left, with wings spread, holding wreath in beak; below, crescent above ram leaping left, head right. Tetradrachm, Antioch, 242 10,91 g / 26 mm McAlee 881; Prieur 298 While I do like the coin (I must have gotten turned on by the left facing portrait...), I have no real need for it (I don´t collect Provincials and already have a Gordian III Sestertius). Tell me if you think it is a keeper and / or show your random and useless purchases (maybe we can trade...)
I'd keep it, left facing is scarcer. Gordian III (238 - 244 A.D.) AR Tetradrachm Syria, Seleucis and Pieria. Antioch O: AVTOK K M ANT GORDIANOC CEB, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right R: DHMAPX EX UPATO B, eagle standing facing, head left with wreath in beak, below, crescent & ram running left. Antioch Mint, Struck 242 A.D. 27mm 13.5g Prieur 301
I just bought a nice tetradrachm of Trajanus Decius. And then I bought another one, because I keep confusing Trajanus Decius with Trebonianus Gallus. You are welcome for trading! Seleucis & Pieria / Antiochia. 25 mm, 10.10 gr.
I'd bought it on purpose. I see no issues left facing or otherwise and would have no problems adopting it.
The great paradox of coin collecting is that all coin purchases are totally necessary, while at the same time being totally unnecessary.
Once you have the coin in hand you will see why so many of us love these 'imperial' tets. And you certainly got a nice one!
That's a nice coin. And you can't have too many Gordies. No matter how many you have, there's always another you don't.
I do not believe anything from Antioch can be considered a random or useless purchase! "Struck in Antioch" is to roman coins what "made in Italy" is to clothing! Peter
