Hello, I recently inherited a rather large currency collection from my recently deceased grandfather. The collection has around 100 individual pieces of currency from all over the world. The main places the currency appears to be from are Indonesia, Laos, China, Greece, Hungary, Bulgaria. Chile, Bolivia, Brazil, alot of Japanese WWII currency in many different forms of currency, alot of post WWI pre-WWII German inflation money. There are also individual bills from many other places such as 1949 Cuba, Haiti and many more. I didn't really expect there to be any value in this collection at all and I was just gonna list the whole collection on ebay for l00 bucks. I decided that before i did that i would at least look up a few of the bills on ebay to see what they sold for. Thank god i did cause as it turned out many of the bills sold in the 20-50 dollar range and I even found a few that sold for around 500 - 750$. I am starting to think this collection might have some real potential, especially considering that at least 85%of all the currency is in perfect or near perfect condition. There is also a large collection of us wheat pennies some of which I have discovered to be quite valuable as well and quite a few pennies that appear to be double die, but im no coin expert and have no clue what the value is. My point is, i am trying to sell this collection and can't find the values for everything on ebay...plus im not sure if that is even a suitable benchmark tool for the value. I was hoping some one could maybe take a moment or two to share with me some good resources I can use to determine the value of this stuff. In regards to the coin currency, I discovered pretty quick that the value of coins isl argely based on little qualitative details that to the uneducated like are not that easy to see or figure out. I was hoping someone would be kind enough to recommend someone who would be a good resource to look at those pennies as well as all the international coin currency. I would also be willing to take pictures and post them on the forum somewhere if someone wanted to take a look, I just didnt want to assume that people would care or automatically be interested in the collection so i didn't want to just take up space and scatter pictures everywhere. Anyways, Im kinda lost and overwhelmed at the moment with this collection so any help or guidance provided would be really really appreciated. Thanks if you took the time to read this, hope to hearback from some people.
From what I just read, I'm guessing you have little interest in keeping the collection. If there is no need for expediency then I would break it all down into smaller, more manageable groups. Virtually everything numismatic can be researched and values attributed. Sounds like you need expert advise from a source where integrity is paramount. I would start by contacting some of the members of the PCDA which can be found in the trade magazines.
When you start to talk doubled die cents, you open a real can of worms. Many "doubled die" cents are Machine Doubling and essentially worth face value. Don't be in any hurry, post some here and get an unbiased opinion. If your photography skills are lacking, a scan on a scanner/printer might be good enough.
