And the last of the lot.....but by no means the least Seleukid Empire, Antiochos I Soter AR Tethradrachm
Some of us have deeper pockets than others, for sure. But it ain't just how much is in your pockets, it's how you spend it that counts. I've had times when I've thought, "Oh, man, I wish I could buy coins like @1934 Wreath Crown or @AncientJoe". They not only seem to have some means, but well-developed taste in applying those resources. But I'm not either of them. In the end, I've gotta be @lordmarcovan. I try to do the best I can with the resources I have, so my coins can "punch above their weight class", to use a boxing metaphor. I think I do OK with what I've got. And I see others here (@Mat comes to mind) who also seem to consistently get good "bang for the buck".
I envy you your selection of coins LM so a comment like that carries a lot of weight in my books. Thanks. And incidentally, for everyone watching this thread, I don't think I went crazy and paid a huge price for any of these coins. I have seen lesser quality sell for many times, at more reputable/popular auctions, than what I paid for these. I don't have bottomless pockets and certainly do not wish to pay more than I can resell any coin for. This will probably be my last big hurrah for a while.
..but then again, if they know you are a heavy, your bidder name could keep possible competitors at bay..or it could have the reverse effect too, yeah..
You're right... the name effect can cut both ways. Perhaps the most dramatic example of a bidder identity negatively affecting that bidder is that of "the Sheikh". Supposedly, after dealers understood that he would bid unceasingly until he won, without regard to price (shutting out those dealers and their clients), they began bidding against him just to drive the price up and make him suffer. This is from the rumor mill, although you can certainly Google for more information about this infamous and relatively recent chapter in ancient numismatics.
Loose lips sink ships..................run silent, run deep is my strategy. I have boats in the water at the moment.............the fish are armed...... and I am always ready to pull a Crazy Ivan. That is the closest I will come to broaching the boat.
@lordmarcovan Think of me as a fly who spends many hours buzzing around in search of the filet mignon droppings or lobster bits while the other flies hang around public trash bins/dumpsters *International Auction Houses come to mind, HAHA*, fighting for whatever is available. Many times filet mignon droppings or lobster bits go unnoticed and it's ALL MINE!
One can often snap up some good "scraps" around where the larger, more elite creatures feed. I've done it a time or two myself.
