All righty then, I was at my usual dealer and he keeps a bin of "trash" six for a dollar coins he can never seem to sell, mostly its world garbage, but I make it a point to root through it when I go in just to see if there is something interesting for me or the kids. Today I hit the proverbial jackpot. I found two off center struck dimes, one undated and one 1995 D, a 90% off center quarter with only the date showing, and the piece de resistance a 1995 D half dollar broadstruck on a clipped planchet. WOW! Have a look, and any of you error collectors have a general idea on what the going rate is for these errors? Heck, I can't go wrong I only paid a dollar for the group.

i'm not good with errors, but i would say that half is worth $95 like that. the dimes are worth probaly $8 a piece, and the quarter i'd say about $30. so you did pretty good for $1!

    Geez BQ,

I love the quarter the most myself but what's with your dealer?

How long has he been in business - like 20 minutes? Has he never heard of the internet?

It's hard to put a value on errors but you have A HELL OF A LOT more than a buck there. For that matter you got them at face value!

I'd put those babies up for auction with good pics then take the money to buy something you really want.

    Good job!

It's funny, he bought the shop from another dealer, that I frequented, while I was deployed. So I get back and the shop looks different. The previous guy retired to write, so the new guy emptied out the store of all the [sic?] antiquey stuff the guy had in there except for two giant antique wall clocks, then reloaded the store with all his goods, I wandered in in January and said "where's mike?" and was told he retired and moved to write a book. So I was curious started poking around the store and this guy has an knack for getting in good stuff cheap, so he sells it cheap, and hes not a shyster either, he is the most honest guy I've run into since my last great coin shop in 2002 in hawaii. I've picked up a lot of GREAT coins at wholesale or better a lot of the time. He doesn't do the internet, so he can spend extra time with his family, and he must be doing pretty good, because he employs a full time assistant, and a part time assistant.

It is hard to put actual prices on these type of errors as they seem to vary so much! However, I would venture that the un-dated Dime will fetch $8-$13, the dated dime $15-$20 and the Quarter $50 to $100. If the Clip on the Broadstruck Half Dollar is genuine and not man made, then it will probably fetch up to $100 or more.

Great pick up! If you did not check every coin in the Dealer's Discount Bin, then you should hurry back and look for more errors before they get picked through!

Those are some great coins, My 7 year old son saw them up on the screen yesterday and it stopped him dead in his tracks. He is so used to seeing coins now that he generally does not pay much attention.

(At 7 years old the gameboy DS is much more interesting - he always working on getting his pokemon to evolve :-( )

He wanted to know if they were real and why someone would make coins that look like that. I had a good chuckle and we talked a little about errors.

I too love that half, would have died and gone to heaven to see that in a bin like you did. Congrats on a great find!

Would any of you recommend getting the half certified, and who is the leading TPG for error coins?

I'm not so sure it's genuine clip, but then I'm not an error guy. I'd probably ask the folks at CONECA before I did anything. If they say it's real, then I'd send it to NGC.

for errors & varieties, I'd use ANACS.
