Please offer up a grade and fair market value for this 1803 Large Cent. If you click on the Photobucket hosted pictures it should allow you to enlarge them. Thanks.
I can never get these to enlarge, but as a small picture, looks at least VG. I assume common variety: Stemless (reverse) would be $150 in VG; $300 in Fine. (Retail of course.)
Does everyone really think this coin is only Very Good? I was thinking it looked more like VF-20. Is that just wishful thinking on my part?
I don't have any of my grading books with me & have no experience with these really, but I'd guess F-12 or F-15. Could be your VF-20.
Nice coin and nice planchet! It appears to be Struck Thru grease at the "T" & "A" in STATES. I believe that it will grade around a VF-25! Frank
Yes, I observed that as well. It seems to have been weakly struck in that area. I do think the obverse has more eye appeal than the reverse. I don't buy Large Cents very often but I spotted this coin in a local dealer's display case on Wednesday and thought it looked too nice to pass up.
Here is an 1803 Large Cent that someone is selling on Ebay. This one has been graded VF-25 by PCGS. I don't think mine looks much worse than that coin, do you? http://cgi.ebay.com/1803-Draped-Bus...ryZ11947QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem
I think it's a VF-25 and from the pics it looks like it has great surfaces. I honestly think its a high three figure coin value wise.
From looking at the pics, I was thinking f-12/15, from reading the posts, I'm gonna stick with f-15 firm, but who knows coins almost always look different in hand then in photos.
That PCGS graded coin has an unattractive stain on the obverse. I'm surprised that coin didn't get body bagged. I really like the fact that my coin has a nice, even, chocolate brown color to it. The dealer that sold me the coin had assigned a grade of Fine-12 to it but, like I said, I'm thinking he might have undergraded it. When I compare my coin to the pictures in my ANA Grading Guide as well as pictures on Ebay of other professionally slabbed draped bust cents it is reinforcing my belief that this coin is a Very Fine. For those of you that do not feel this coin is a Very Fine, could you please explain detail-wise why? Thank you.
I'll go along with VF. The hair details are mostly there and all the lettering is in good shape. Most of the older copper cents were flatly struck, so even an AU example may not look any better. Hard to say. Guy~
It's really hard to tell from the pictures, so I won't venture a guess on grade. Here's greysheet prices for 1803 Small Date Small Fraction (per the notes on the 2x2) : VG 65 F 140 VF 275 OK, OK, I'll venture a guess on grade. My first impulse was F, but it might well be VF20 / 25. Looks clean and original. Nice coin !
My 2008 Redbook lists the coin at $165 in F-12 and $340 in VF-20. So one grade better seems to make quite a difference price wise. Btw, I paid $135 for this coin. That seems like a lot for a cent that isn't considered a key-date but I really do like this coin.
I think you got a good deal ! That's F-12 money and it likely will grade higher than that. More importantly, it's clean - corrosion free and almost bumpless. Nice eye appeal ! :thumb: ...and THAT is what really counts !
