Should I ask PCGS to "conserve" this Barber quarter?

This will be going out for grading right away so would you ask the TPG to clean it? Would that take care of the black spots?

My first impression is to leave it be.

There are quite a few "black areas" and it's hard to tell what they all are. I don't see any technical "carbon spots": symmetrical black "powdery" mounds that will spread over time. Other areas look like "crud" and still others, tarnish (possibly the remnants of a dip).

I don't know how PCGS handles cleaning. I have a nice '40 large cent that had had several carbon spots removed by NCS (before I purchased it) and it helped bump the grade from 65 to 66. I would vote for cleaning if they can get rid of all this stuff, if the coin is worth it.

I'd be interested in seeing the results of this one.

My first thought is not to mess with it. If I did I would probably use NCS. Who graded it and what grade? Nice coin.

My guess would be that the coin has already been cleaned and what you see is what remains from the previous cleaning.

    I'd leave it alone.

I bought it in a BS MS63 slab but the luster and lack of hairlines made me think it could get a decent grade. It will be a few weeks but I'll update with the results of proper grading.

    Does PCGS do conserving?
I know NGC does through NCS but never heard of PCGS doing so.

It looks like a slider and it seems to have nice remaining luster and color for the grade. Another dip may remove the crud, but could also turn it too "white" maybe...?

That's kind of my line of thinking as well, I think the coin has already been dipped. So dipping it again, may very well remove any luster that remains on the coin. And if that happens the result will be a details slab.
