US Mint reveals proposed designs for 'tails side' of Apollo 11 50th anniversary coins

I kind of like the fake of the Dan Carr proposal for the dollar coin The "Mr Bill" design:

The commission has been so good lately at micromanaging our coinage. Nobody need worry -- they will take this wonderful anniversary and screw it up beyond all earthly belief.

 

Agreed; my first impression—even after realizing the "helmet reflection" idea—was that the design is trying to do too many things at once. Seems forced. However, the visor idea might be helped along considerably by the convexity of the coin, which could be interesting.

 

I'm cautiously optimitic about these. The baseball coin turned out great, if this one does as well maybe the mint should have all their products with that shape

 

The main reason is that laws, that get passed, put so many limitations on what already needs to be on the coin that the artist/designer doesn't have as much space to work with. You also have to take into account the PC nature of politics. So most out our designs are playing it safe!!
