That's likely to damage the coin.

Like I said previously, shake it in a glass jar, it may take up to a minute of shaking, but it will come apart. This is the cheap method for separating the scotch and soda coins (which is how they are labeled if you were to buy one). The preferred method is to use a Bang Ring designed for separating the coins.

Based on your stats, it would take about $20,000 worth of pennies to amass a $50 bag of wheat pennies. At four $25 boxes per week, that would only take a little over 3½ years to do. I think this is definitely a project for my son.

An excellent point… and very well delivered (ha-ha!)

Not that I’m a slow learner, but I also searched five $100 boxes of nickels (10,000 coins) and found a single Indian Head (Buffalo). Prevalence 1:10,000 (0.01%). The date on it was completely worn off. I can buy a similar undated buffalo at my local coin dealer for about ten cents; but, what could possibly replace the thrill of seeing my single buffalo thundering out of the crowd of common Jeffersons???

Went to the bank the other day to get a roll of dollar coins (I live in Canada so they were loonies), and got a mint roll of 1992 loonies the 125 anniversary of Canada commerative. Usually mint rolls I get at the bank are usually that year or the year before, so it was a little strange to find one that was 15 years old. Apparently somebody had cashed in a hoard of 1992 coins, because the teller had rolls of 1992 provincial quarters but they had been searched and mixed so I did not take any.

I posted my stats in another thread, but thought I should post it here as well. People who read this thread might find it interesting. Here's my results for searching $25 boxes of pennies:

    Total boxes searched: 9
    Total Wheats: 83
Most wheats in a box: 14
Least wheats in a box: 3

    Errors found: 6 total
    3 - 1998 wide "AM" in America
    2 - 2000 wide "AM" in America
    1 - 1997 double ear "doubled die"

I stopped searching pennies almost a year and a half ago. I look forward to starting up again.

Several new banks have opened in my town within the last 2 years, but I've shyed away from visiting them for rolls because I don't have an account with any of them. Today was different. I stopped into a First Interstate near my job and handed the teller $500. I asked for a box of halves. She got them for me without blinking an eye, and said I could order more if I wanted them.

This box is unlike any I've ever seen. The rolls are stacked on top of one another, two deep, making for a short box that is taller and narrower than I'm used to. Moreover, the box is reinforced with plastic "straps" and not simply glued shut. It has no stamp or date. I told the teller I'd never seen a box like it before. She said it came straight from a Federal Reserve bank and that all of their boxes looked like it.

Should/could be interesting what I will find inside.....

Well, not quite what I expected.

The coins didn't come from the Fed. They were rolled by an armored car service.

I did find two '06-Ds, a '99-S clad proof, and two nice replacements for the Dansco album.

    Oh well.....

Been almost a year since I last search through some halfs, but so far so good.

6 rolls searched, 12 more to go. Finds so far:

    1 - 1966 Kennedy %40
    1 - 1968 D Kennedy %40
1 - 1982 P (a tougher date to find in circ though they abound on ebay).

The best part though was walking into the first bank and asking for halfs. The reply is may FAVORITE...."No boxes, but some old guy came through yesterday and cashed a bunch in. Do you want those?" $26 in silver face later, I walked out with a smile. Nothing fancy, all 1964s, but silver is silver. :D

I took about 3 weeks off while we moved to a new house (and we're still not done!) I decided it was time to get some rolls again.

Picked up a box of pennies and $100 in dimes. (They didn't have any boxes of nickels today). Good thing, as I picked out 2 silver dimes from the first roll. 1962 and then a 1951. Needless to say, the rest of the dimes were a letdown. :(

Through $5 worth of pennies and so far a couple of wheats and a George VI, oldest being a 1940 wheat. I'll finish the other $20 in pennies before the weekend is over.

went through three boxes of halves today with the kids. We found another 78-S proof along with a 65, 66, 67, 68-D. Not bad I guess, we had fun.

    A tale of two boxes

I picked up two boxes of halves from the bank last week. The first box did not have a date stamp on it and contained a disproportionate number of 1999D Kennedys (363 total). Only real keepers were two silver clad coins (1965 and 1968D) and a 1987P. The second box had a CWI date of April 16, 2006. 4 Walkers, 5 Franklins, and 3 1964 Kennedys. While not in the greatest shape, one of the Walkers was this little guy below.....

I almost forgot, for those that are interested, the dates for the silver coins were the 1938D posted above, two 1942P, 1945P, two 1951P, 1958D, 1959P, 1961D, two 1964D, and a 1964P. Since last week, I have searched two additional boxes and only found 7 clad silver coins (1965, 1966, three 1967, and two 1968D) and another 1987P. As before, neither box had a date stamp.

This past weekend while roll searching I found a 1909 VDB doubled die (fs-012) EF-45. Somebody spent dad's collection.:smile

I went to a few banks today....One had $620 in halves, so I bought them. I ended up finding 1 1964 and 29 40%'ers. However, It was a stop at another bank that was really awesome. I asked if they had any large sized dollars, and they said they did, and the teller proceeded to take a stack of 10 Eisenhower dollars out of her drawer. She counted them, and as I was watching her count, I see that the last coin was a MORGAN!! This is the first Silver Dollar I have ever gotten at a bank....It was a 1921, but it's still sweet....Here are the pics!
