One thing i forgot, a young man, sounded European asked me if i bought coins, said i do and he pulls out a bag of 19 Aegina silver sea turtles Staters. first thing i think they can't be real, so i showed them to 3 of the Ancient dealers, weighed them all in the 12.g area. they thought the were real, but i have my doubts. ne wanted 2000 ea. there were nice but not that nice, i wish i would have taken some pictures, very impressive...
Matt, that picture wasn't actually one of my cases i was tired and it slipped between my two. the one picture above not a coin over $40 most were $20.the picture below it were just my World coins, the three dealers that just sold ancient were pricey..
Ah, thats what my problem is with Long Beach, too many have bug mark ups and I just balk at the prices and move along. Now the $40 & under, thats my area, lol. But rarely do I see ancients in LB priced that low unless its LRBs.
Sorry Steve, i was hoping 49ners would win... As for the show day, i wasn't very busy, but i made a few last minute sales, bought few more modern coins. the Tet that wanted sold, so i didn't purchase anything. I would post a few more pictures but the coin dealers went nuts when i was taking their pictures, said you could be thrown out, oh well.. Went and pick up the truck and dropped off the coin cases put them back in the locker. glad it's over got to get my stuff in the safe. This is the End of my life as a Ancient coin collector and dealer...
Collect foreign coins instead: it lessens but may not completely eliminate the problem. I can go to a foreign coin show and find not one new piece that I'd want to buy. There is one old piece there tho. The dealer & I have been fighting over it for the past year. He won't go down 1 cent. I've been interested in the coin for over a year and no body else bought it during that time frame. Sometimes I just don't understand coin dealers.
How nice were they? $2,000 sounds like a lot of money. I only paid $1,400 for mine out of Stack's, NYINCS, 8 Jan 2016, lot# 30074 ($1,645 w/ comm). Provenance: From the Syracuse Collection, Part III. Ex: Coin Galleries November 2002, Lot# 122. Oh yes, the photo: Aegina, silver didrachma [also called a stater], 12.30 gm, ca. 480-457 B.C. NGC Ch VF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 5/5
A great thread! Bless you coin dealers and how hard you work to make such fun for us! Looking at the ammo in the coin case reminds me of when I was kid. I used to go to gun shows with my dad on the weekends and there were often several coin dealers at them where I would spend a lot of time going through their boxes. There were tables and tables of fun to be had at those things when I was a kid. The small local gun shows are mostly all gone today. I'm off to NYINC tomorrow and the great coin show in the Big Apple next week!
Looking at the snow out my window at the moment suggests this could be a bad day to travel. They predict 70 degrees Friday here. Keep us posted.
You are correct. My flight was cancelled just as I was boarding the plane. Going to try again tomorrow.
Collect nice foreign coins instead. You can go to a major show and not find a single piece, not at any price. I go to these local coin shows and they ask me what I'm looking for. I tell them I need an Ecuadorian 8 reals in mint state, maybe a nice 63. They then tell me "well maybe I'll get one some day". Actually I think one's chances of getting hit by a meteorite may be higher than finding that coin at a dealer's who doesn't know what it is beforehand. Dear Eng Senior Eng, Interesting note. If I ever see you at a coin show & if you want I can try to start a copper buying frenzy by buying 20 of the things when you have customers. I'd have to return them after the show however. Actually I'm thinking that I'd really like to get some 90% silver half dollars: a much larger quantity than I can get by just getting them out of the banks here at face. <= possible but it takes a long time to get them.
