Well, I've now added three more MA Legionary denarii to my collection, bringing my total to 15 different legions. Of course many of the remaining legions are the scarcer and more expensive denarii, but it's not a collection I need to complete any time soon. So far now, my collection has representatives of the following legions: Leg II, Leg III, Leg V, Leg VI, Leg VIII, Leg IX, Leg XI, Leg XII, Leg XIII, Leg XV, Leg XVI, Leg XIX, Leg XX, Leg XXII, Leg XXIII Here are my three new coins Leg XII Leg XV Leg XXIII What I am missing: CHORTIVM PRAETORIARVM CHORTIS SPECVLATORVM LEG PRI extremely rare LEG IIX extremely rare LEG VIIII scarce LEG XII ANTIQVAE LEG XIIII scarce LEG XVII CLASSICAE LEG XVIII scarce LEG XVIII LYBICAE scarce LEG XVIIII very rare The following quantities of Antony's Legionary Denarii were contained in the Delos Hoard of 1905 CHOR PRAET 6 XII ANTIQVAE 5 XVII CLASSICAE 8 XVIII LYBICAE 4 CHOR SPECVL 9 PRI None II 40 III 25 IIII None IV 28 V 37 VI 36 VII 27 VIII 27 IIX not in Crawford, none in hoard. Congratulations on your new coins, Bing. All three great additions. This was my last purchase - Legio II. I now have a fleet of 5 Marcus Antonius legionary denarii.
I used to have a Legion VI, but I sold it a long time ago. It cost $60 at the time, so I guess they have appreciated significantly since then.
Marc Antony (44 - 30 B.C.) AR Denarius O: ANT AVG III VIR R P C, Praetorian galley right. R: LEG III Aquila between two signa; LEG III across lower field. Patrae mint 32-31 B.C . 3.14g 18mm Crawford 544/15; CRI 350; Sydenham 1217; RSC 28 Legio III Gallica was levied by Julius Caesar around 49 BC, for his civil war against the conservative republicans led by Pompey. The legion took part in all Julius Caesar's campaigns against his enemies, including the battles of Pharsalus and Munda. Following Caesar's death, III Gallica was integrated in the army of Mark Antony for his campaigns against the Parthians. They were included in the army levied by Fulvia and Lucius Antonius (Antony's wife and brother) to oppose Octavian, but ended by surrendering in Perugia, in the winter of 41 BC. After the battle of Actium and Antony's suicide, the III Gallica was sent again to the East, where they garrisoned the province of Syria. III Gallica was used in Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo's campaign against the Parthians over the control of Armenia (63). Corbulo's successes triggered emperor Nero's paranoia of persecution and eventually the general was forced to commit suicide. After this, III Gallica is transferred to Moesia province, in the Danube border.
A very nice group of acquisitions @Bing Here is my only legionary denarius. Leg XII Antiquae (5 in the Delos hoard)
Great coins everyone! @Bing your Legionary collection is coming along nicely, awesome additions. Still only the LEG VI for me.
Niche lists can both be both a blessing and a curse. The nice thing about an ancient coin niche is that you determine when it is personally completed. Looking at your Forvm Gallery I see you have a good start with these. Congrats on your new additions!
That is completely correct and very liberating. Collect what you like and move to something different whenever you want.
nice coins, Op and all.. the only legionary MA i ever bought was deemed a counterfeit by NGC along with an Otho and i've never secured either again.
Thanks all for the nice replies and compliments. The problem with most of these is the amount of circulation wear making it hard to complete the collection with really nice coins. Besides, the coins that show no, or very little, wear seem to command premium prices. Of the list I presented, in order for me to complete this sub collection, I need 11 more. Most of the 11 are considered scarce to rare. Even if not either, they command high prices anyway due to collectability, i.e. CHORTIVM PRAETORIARVM, CHORTIS SPECVLATORVM, LEG PRI. In other words, I have a real job ahead to complete this and keep somewhere within a budget (oh why did I ever start this?).
"..we choose to do these things not because they are easy, but because they are hard"...i'm sure you know where this came from^^
woah, i knew you had several of these bing...but i didn't know you had that many..awesome! I still don't have one of these! Very much on the list.
