How did this grade MS62 with those scratches on the head? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1795-10-13-...729724?hash=item488e6688fc:g:Vo8AAOSwjqVZMKbA
Perhaps you could clarify exactly which anomalies you believe to be "scratches"? Have you considered what you're seeing may be something else entirely?
This. The coin is as-issued by the Mint, which was more concerned with issuing coins of the precise weight stated for value than it was a third-party grader over two centuries hence. Pretty hefty price for a coin which last publicly transacted at $115,000.
I would guess adjustment marks from a file. I thought those were more on silver coins. Could also be scratches on holder which are hard to discern. Sent from my STH100-1 using Tapatalk
They are actually even more common on gold, because it is more valuable. Silver coins were frequently adjusted, but because gold was so much more valuable it was very important to get it perfect. These adjustment marks do not typically detract from the grade of the coin because they are a mint-made effect (pre-striking). Even multi-million dollar coins have them, such as the notorious so-called specimen first strike 1794 Dollar (the most expensive coin in the world).
True, but with such a massive jump to 63, I don't feel that it's unwarranted given the semi PL look. The adjustment marks are very distracting, but also very common. I'm not sure why I'm even worried about it anyway, it will probably always be beyond what my budget would allow.
