I can make out 'Sr Bevois Southampton' on the obverse and 'Promissory H' on the reverse, which leads me to believe that it's 'half penny' of some sort. Year looks to be 1791.
It's a conder token - 1791 Hampshire Portsmouth Halfpenny Condor Token D&H #89 OBVERSE: A helmeted bust to right. SR. BEVOIS SOUTHAMPTON. REVERSE: Shield of Arms. 1791 PROMISSORY HALFPENNY. EDGE: PAYABLE AT THE OFFICE OF W. TAYLOR E. V. MOODY & CO. Click Here value - a dollar or two maybe
I have this coin as well...the obverse is in good shape, the reverse is pretty worn though...I like it though, I like the details on the shoulder plate.
I think you must mean is not hard to find. It is actually just about the most common Conder token there is. I've got close to a dozen of them from Fine to Proof. I seem to have fascination for them because they are so affordable in proof. When Boulton was trying to sew up the deal for these he sent the client some proof examples of other tokens he had done. When the order arrived the client was disappointed because the quality of the business strikes he received was not up to the quality of the proofs he had been shown so Boulton did a run of proofs for him as well making them very common today. (relatively speaking)
