The more I read the more I think I should pick just one group like pennies or nickels. Would the community agree. It's too much info, this early. Would it be possible to make $50 a week etc. etc. at this hobby? Do some? Seems like knowledge is absolute king. And I read, read and read. Thanks Tom.

  3. Reading is a very good idea. There are also experts on cents and nickels here on CT as well. I would also suggest focusing in on something feasible that you can also enjoy. Often the hunt can be rewarding. Good luck! TC

Think of all the hobbies that return $50 a week and name them so these hobbies can be compared.

I enjoy this hobby for the sake of learning about ancient history, U.S. military history, and collecting. I work to earn a profit. This is what I do when I don't work.

Possible ? Yes. Easy ? No.

Whatever you do make sure you don't get into this hobby with the intent of making money, a profit. I say that because very few do. Probably 95% of all collectors lose money on their collections, and that number is not an exaggeration. It is reality.

There is only 1 reason that a person should get into this hobby, and that is because you like it ! Doing it for any other reason is pretty much a fool's errand.

To make money you've got to be a dealer which is very different than being a collector. There are hundreds of niches in the hobby to make money and thousands of dealers. Some do exceedingly well.

When I 1st started I got sick of hearing all of these old geezers in my club saying things like "buy the book before the coin" and "don't buy the holder buy the coin" bla bala bla I didn't listen to a thing they ever said and I am now a better grader than all of them put together. What ever you do, don't listen to anyone who tells you those 2 tips.
And another thing don't listen to people that say coins are bad investments or you cant make money. I have made tons of money and I plan on making a lot more once I get my business off the ground.

    That's enough, @ed wood 654

When you start giving out your garbage seriously to a new collector, it is time for the experienced collectors to call you out. edited Do everyone a favor and get off the site.

That'll be enough of that !

Absolutely everyone has a right to their own opinion. Even if one does find that opinion to be ridiculous.

I doubt many collectors make any money at all on the hobby. Speaking for myself I only spend money! I earn money to collect, not collect to earn money.

For the sake of the OP and anyone else who may stumble upon this complete and utter nonsense, please understand that the sewer systems of all major US cities combined hold less excrement than the quoted individual spews at every opportunity.

Those old guys were teaching others to learn what they are doing before they spend their hard earned money. They sound really wise to me. We need more folks like this in the hobby.

What you need to do is take what you learn from everyone you come in contact with and make it work for you. You may run in to people who are utter fools in this coin world and you may stumble upon a gem. You decide and you collect what you want to collect. I started out roll hunting cents and am now in to a bunch of different things. I like to collect commemoratives and I roll hunt nickels, dimes and quarters for silver and anything over 50 years old. Get your knowledge and be a sponge. Do what you like. It's your hobby.

Well, my thanks. I am hooked already. I don't want to sell what I have already. But time will tell.

Don't believe what most of these posts say.
I know for a fact you can good money on coins with just a little knowledge because I do it all the time.
I have a friend who got into coins about 4 years ago... he had no knowledge of collecting, values, vams,or anything. He just learned by reading and watching.
He bought coins off ebay at auction that tend to go cheaper than buy it nows... then put the coins up as buy it nows and has made 5 to 6 grand in 4 years and it helped him buy his own coins and a motorcycle.
I have bought and sold on ebay, the local paper, auctions, facebook, and other local collectors....
Anyone that says 95 percent lose money at coins may or may not be right, but it's false to say you can't do it.
