Hi all, I just wanted to share this find of a 25 Kurus from Turkey. It was a bit of a challenge to get it since it was inside a electrical power vault underneath a grill of a sidewalk in front of my job. For weeks I would look at it wondering what it could be. I took pictures of it to enlarge with no luck with the ID'ing Today I devised a plan...using a long metal rod I stuck Blue Tape on one end to try and get the coin to stick. After 2 attempts the coin stuck but fell both times for pulling up to quickly. In my 3rd attempt I got it! And here it is! I hope you enjoyed my little journey in getting this coin
Sweet! If only coins could talk. I actually saw something similar, possibly even in a thread here on CT, where people in NY utilized poles as you did and 'fished' the grates. Some actually were quite successful. One guy found a solid gold chain and brought it straight to the pawn shop, got a few grand out of it!
Yes I have seen them! Another method is the string and stick method. The problem is that the coin is larger than the space of the grill so its hard to pull out. So with a string and a weight on one end they have gum or some type of sticky substance. When they get the coin or jewelry they then have a stick with a flat cuplike item at the end where they drop the item into then pull out of the grate successfully.
Hahaha.... only in NYC! I make a biannual pilgrimage to the Big Apple, it's nice living just 4 short hours from the best city on the planet. Most recent trip was back in March, I was excited to find out that visiting the 9/11 memorial is now free of charge... that had been on my bucket list for a while.
It was just one coin I did just got back from my local Flea Market and got some great coins.. All for $30 Dollars! Threads to be posted later today or tomorrow evening
A stick or dowel with a small hinged flat piece of wood and double sided tape works. I've done this with regular grates because they are to heavy to move. As I draw the coin up the hinged wood piece will swivel to get through the grate.
Cool find! Guess I would not even have paid any attention to that grill, but it was fun to see how you got it out there. And admittedly I also thought that one of your photos shows two coins, see above. Could be some other round object though. Christian
A few years ago I found a Norwegian 5 kroner on the streets of Chicago. I didn't have to go through all that to get it, but I still thought it was neat that it was just lying there.
When we were kids, we used a long stick or dowel with gum on the end, to fish out coins from the walk over grates outside the movie theater.
