i have a very specific list of the next coins for my portrait series (which now includes imperatorial as well as imperial portraits):
    - Julius Caesar portrait denarius
    - Antinous medallion or drachm
    - Anthony & Cleopatra denarius

The above are doable but pricy. I hope to find something soon. JC seems to have appreciated in value quite a lot recently! Everyone wants one (I have a non-portrait Venus / Aeneas denarius that I want to sell and swap for a proper JC portrait).

What are you looking for next?

I'm on the lookout for a coin that is well struck, and has animals of some kind on "both sides". Could be owls, eagles, elephants, lions, Pegasus, etc... just something unusual that I find interesting enough to not pass up. Any ideas? Price would need to be under $500 (unless gold) then I might be willing to go higher. Looking for a centerpiece to my budding (pathetic) ancient collection.

I'd love to upgrade my JC portrait but I think it will be a long time...

Highest on my list right now is probably a Zeno solidus. On the emperor/caesar list up to the end of the 7th century, and excluding the super-expensive guys, I'm just missing him, Didius Julianus, Pescennius Niger, Balbinus, Quietus, and Hanniballianus.

I'd love a hippo denarius of Otacilia Severa or a denarius of Julia Domna with Cybele driving a quadriga of lions. Always on the look out for Gordian III and Tranquillina marriage issues.

So many items on my want list it's ridiculous. Good thing this hobby is a marathon not a sprint ;)

    The top items on my list are;
    • Peloponnesian War Era Sikyon stater
    • Diocletian silver issue
    • Justinian I coin of any type issued from the Salona mint
    • Well styled example of Ptolemy Soter Tetradrachm
    • Tissaphernes portrait electrum hekte
    • Nerva Sestertius with good portrait
Yeah so when I have to tell my fiancé what my coin budget is I have a feeling she's not going to be happy...

That is quite the list @Greg Heinrich When you do add those coins please post them. I'm sure I'm not the only one on this board that would love to see them.

@Johndoe2000$ I've always liked the AR stater of Sikyon that has the chimaera on the obverse and a dove on the reverse.

Top of my want list is an Edward III Post or Treaty period AR Groat from Calais. I still regret passing up on one offered by Tom Cederlind a few years ago. At the time it was either a airplane ticket to Italy with the girlfriend our the coin.

I read somewhere that these were used extensively by the Spartans... is that true, and is that why you want one?

I don't particularly shop for ancients (didn't know this was an ancients thread until I clicked on it) but I specifically collect ancient coins that depict Jesus Christ. I only have three to my name and wouldn't mind adding to the list when opportunity knocks.

    Not an ancient, but...

I really want this - it "spoke" to me.

It's not really on my "shopping list", so I dunno if it will ever end up in my cart or not.

But I can't stop going back and admiring it. (And the price was recently reduced by 69 bucks, so they must know I've been watching...)
    1. I like the toning very much.
    2. Dated 16th century coins are sexy.
    3. It's a decent-sized silver piece, though not crown-sized.
    4. I've never had a Scottish coin.
    5. I'm of Scottish descent on my mother's side.
    6. I love the thistles.
    7. Plus it's King James, of English bible fame, seen here as James VI of Scotland but later James I of England.
Three things have stayed my hand, though.
    1. Price. I have no idea if the price is fair or not. And it ain't cheap. I don't have any reference material for this sort of thing, since Krause coverage begins in 1601.
    2. Plastic. While I have no problem with NGC coins, I must have good photographs of them without those intrusive "prongs" in the image. If a coin goes into a "prong" insert after it's been well-photographed, OK, but I hate it when the only available pictures have four white "bites" taken out of the coin by the stupid prongs. I wish NGC would only use Edge View inserts on coins that actually have edge lettering, and would go back to their old inserts for everything else. Or better yet, adopt a clear insert with less intrusive prongs like PCGS uses. But that's an overlong rant about plastic.
    3. I've pretty much blown too much money in my recent spree anyway, and it's time to sell a few things, consolidate, get my raw stuff slabbed, and catch up with the reorganization of my "Eclectic Box".

Well, I have a lot of wants....to remedy this "urge", I picked up an extra 12 lawn clients this year. In monetary terms that equals an extra $25K.

Hopefully, with that plus my normal coin funds I can get some delightfull new additions like....

    FDC examples of Roman denarii

    Transylvanian AC Dukaten
    Byzantine AV Solidi
AV Solidus from Theodosius II/ Gratian/ Basiiscus/ Constantine II
    AV Aureus Trajanus Decius
    AV Doulble Friedrich d'or Prussia....

    John

Exactly correct. Sikyon was the primary mint for the Peloponnesian League from 431 BC up until 415 BC when the Persians started footing the bill. Spartans didn't use money but they found they needed it to pay for a (rather inept) navy. Why Corinth wasn't chosen is anyone's guess but it probably had to do with thier refusal to switch weight standards.

  16. TIF

    TIF Always learning.

I'm not sure what's next... whatever I find from my wish list or maybe something that just catches my imagination. Whatever it is, I'm unlikely to publicize it before purchasing. Why bring additional attention to a type, potentially creating more competition?

But hey... y'all keep posting your targets, that way I'll know who I have to worry about come auction time ;)

The concept of a specific and immediate want list is something brought to the ancient hobby by immigrants from modern collecting where anything can be found if you have the cash. With ancients, you need to buy when the coin presents itself and not when you are in the mood unless your wants are very general (like Mint State denarii). My want list is something I didn't know I wanted and didn't know existed until it turned up. I suggest using loose lists rather than passing up that perfect Nerva just because Vitellius was higher on the list.

Right now I am interested in coins showing Caracalla and Geta together that I don't have. There are not enough types to be too picky. By the time I go to my next show, I could easily gotten over them altogether and be happy to see what I see.

I seem to have fallen more into the 'approach' Doug and TIF (among others) mention. I have a 'list', mostly mental, but I tend to wait and see what comes up and decide if it fits my budget, my tolerance level/interest and then bid accordingly.

    But, I am after a JC portrait:p

Also more tetradrachms within my budget.

There is a modern coin that is immediately on that list, but no matter. The only things I am looking for are coins to resell to pay for my study abroad ventures next spring.

Of course, I'd like something like the scale weights I saw at a Goldberg auction.
