I only gave $9.00 for it so I can't get hurt too bad. The scratches on the obverse are on the 2x2. G? VG? half1.jpg half2.jpg

Right on the cusp between G and VG, I'd say. I'd call it G6, personally. Low grade but does look original. The scratches would be a concern but I'll take your word that those are on the mylar rather than the coin.

I reckon I can think of worse things to drop nine bucks on.

I'd agree with @lordmarcovan on the G-6 to VG-8 range. If the surfaces are original and not monkeyed with, I would not argue a VG-8.

1853 was a transition year the half dime changed from a weight of 20.8 grains to 19.2. To distinguish between the two as there were 1853 H-10's struck without arrows. Which are very rare, and with arrows. What you have here is a Valentine #2 high date the 1 touches the rock.the 8 is close, defect at the base of the 1 and top of the 8. The digits are medium size and closely grouped. The arrows are small close to the digits . Both arrow heads touch the the base. Defects on the 10,11,12 th. stars.
    Rev. Has medium-sized lettering.
warning these can become habit forming!

Hey, for $9 you can't really go wrong!

This coin does not grade VG. The rims MUST be complete for VG.

    This coin grades G-06.
