After school let out today, I met up with the teacher in charge of the activities so I could meet the three kids that signed up for my collectors club. When I got there, we had a little chuckle because only one of them showed up. ONE DAMN KID! It was cool though. She's a really cool sixth grader who collects antique dolls and pandas. She really knew her stuff too. I brought some of my coins today to share. Turns out her dad is a coin collector. She recognized some of the pieces, but was interested in some of the ones she hadn't seen before. After that, I worked for a couple hours supervising the volleyball game. Boring, but it was an extra $20. After the game, I barely had time to make it to Lawrence for the coin club meeting up there. The group has grown substantially in size since my last visit in June. I mentioned to the group about my after school club and I got a lot of great feedback and many offers to give presentations. While I was there, I bought a really nice XF 1893 Columbian Expo Half from a guy for $11. I'll probably get the 1892 when I go to the next meeting.
I suspect you'll get more kinds soon. You might even spark some interst among kids who have never thought about the hobbies. Sounds like a pretty nice club meeting over there in Lawrence too.
Sounds like you're off to a good start. One interested kid can generate a whole lot of enthusiasm. Good luck with it.
