They just bypass one law with another (see post #19 above). According to U.S. Code § 5112. Denominations, specifications, and design of coins

    Sect (d) (1) reads:

"The design on the reverse side of the dollar, half dollar, and quarter dollar is an eagle."

    Then Sect (I)(1))(A) reads:

"Redesign and Issuance of Quarter Dollar in Commemoration of Each of the 50 States.—
Redesign beginning in 1999.— In general.— Notwithstanding the fourth sentence of subsection (d)(1) and subsection (d)(2), quarter dollar coins issued during the 10-year period beginning in 1999, shall have designs on the reverse side selected in accordance with this subsection which are emblematic of the 50 States"

designs that each lasted 20+ years. i dont hate the presidential dollars because i hardly see any...... after the idea of having the 50 state quarters they had to make more collectible junk - IE the beanie babies of coins.

It sounds funny, but I think the Presidents have to earn their faces on American currency.

The presidential dollar looks like it's from some secondary private mint.

Coins with facing portraits do not wear well.

The Byzantine Empire tried it over 1000 years ago.
I have a Justinian coin that has worn so that the portrait looks like an ant.

I'm talking about the overall design of the coin. It reminds me of a token. I'm not talking about whether presidents are sexy or not. I agree that a coin should represent the fundamentals that the United States was founded upon and it's great history and individuals. I'm just not seeing the presidential coin designs are representing that to the full potential that the mint is capable of. It's an opinion. I don't need four paragraphs with a great conclusion and an expanded vocabulary usage to present my thoughts. I keep things short and sweet. I'm a kid. I'm new to coin collecting, and I just want to learn on this here forum and be accepted. So, sorry.

Is there some sort of rule against being negative towards and inanimate hunk of metal?

Exactly why I find some presidents on a coin as being funny. Historically speaking some should not be there because they have not earned it. These coins though are ones I have to own though because they are so unique. Others such as Adams are not historically given their due, and I am happy they are there. In terms of their artistic merit, I found some that could have been done better. The reverse is okay but the portrait is lacking sometimes. If I want art, some first spouse medals (especially Julia Tyler) give me that.

to me these are coin like looking discs.. round objects that the government poorly designs and passes to the public as a collectors item. For a premium of course :dead-horse:

I'd love to see Charlton Heston as Moses on a design. It's just a matter of time before a TV or Movie Character's image will be on a design since we now have the WB Studio Icon.

I like them. I certainly don't love them, but I like them, and the concept behind it. They will never circulate unless the paper dollar is eliminated, and thus their purpose will never fully be realized until then. I think the color is the best thing about them.

Unfortunately, you are not alone in your distaste for the dollar coins. Here's an article today in Yahoo about this subject:

    http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/1-billion-no-one-united-states-wants-194115156.html

Also, the author of the article refers to them as "gold" coins, further confusing things.

As for me, I order 10 rolls of the Native American dollar every year through the ship direct program and I enjoy spending them. However, I've never received one back in circulation. And when I spend them, they're brand new and shiny. That's a different experience than getting the toned coins back.

    Anyway, I'll keep spending them.

As for the Presidential dollars, I agree that the artwork is sub-par, but they're not ugly to me. I only ordered the Lincoln dollar through direct ship.

Hopefully that article will wake some of these so called senators and congresspeople up to the waste that occuring! The sooner they eliminate that coke straw of a paper buck the better off we'll all be. :D

Perhaps CoinTalk should host a march on Washington to boost knowledge of what is going on. (and also to spice up the dollar coin a bit) :hail:

Yeah, I’m one of those mutts too. I’m mainly Cherokee of the Bear Clan, Hunkpapa Sioux, and German. However, I also got a bit of English, French, Dutch, Norwegian, Scottish, and Irish…I come from a very old family. :D

But what about those of use that are paper currency collectors?

I know that they have wanted to do away with the cent for some time, but I must admit that is one of my favorite items to collect. I would be downright depressed if production of the cent stopped, and I imagine that paper currency collectors would feel the same if the dollar bill was done away with.

Then again there is the matter of production costs…
