I would like to welcome a new member @VFR. Just dragged him over kicking and screaming from Ebay. (just kidding) Have a good time her MD, that's what it's all about. Tom
This place is kind of like fishing from a dock on the ocean. Plenty of fish, but you're going to be fighting the seagulls for every one of them.
Thank You ALL for the warm welcome!!! I just ordered a coin microscope and should have some pics and questions on some recent finds........Until then all the best to all.
Okkkkkkk EVERYONE!!!!!! I promised I would be back when I have something to contribute that is meaningful with pictures and questions..... So Here it is!! My description may not be accurate, but the photos coin microscope should give all you coin hounds and Numismatic Physicists an interesting and hopefully enjoyable view. ( The coin is off for grading) My question is: How do you get raised inverted upside down reverse lettering "UNUM" and thin vertical shield lines raised on the obverse underneath an obverse strike????
Does anyone have any guess or estimate of value or examples that have sold at auction??? Thank you all very much.... Best to all, Mike
Tommy! I just put a new find up and I would really appreciate your insights and thoughts.... Best Regards, Mike
Welcome VFR. That is caused by a die clash. the obverse and reverse dies came together without a planchet in between. this damaged the dies leaving a reverse image of the reverse die on the obverse die. Very nice error. this is the first i have seen on a shield cent though I'm sure there have been many. Richard
Richard Thank you for your fast and thought provoking response. I greatly appreciate it. If I am understanding correctly.... the clashing of 2 dies in effect creates a new die??? Wouldn't this create die cracks or a shattered die? How is this kind of error commonly titled? Is there any resource that I can research, that would give me a population report for this kind of error to determine if it is worthy of auction? Since you have not seen this error on a shield cent, would this be considered a rare coin? Thank you very much again for your time, insight, and assistance. Mike
