The coin below was a gift from my grandfather in about 1987. Both my grandparents were very enthusiastic supporters of my interest in numismatics when I was young. I can remember going over to their house on Sundays when I was just a kid (think late 70s to early 80s), my grandfather and I would look up coins in his Krause catalog, and do a little fishing while my grandmother cooked the most amazing breakfast. By the mid 80s I had become interested in ancients, from time to time one or the other of them would ask me to show them which coin I liked in the latest printed catalog that I had received in the mail, this is one of those coins: Roman Republic, C. Claudius Pulcher, AR Denarius 110-109 BC, SR-177
Nice coin. Did your grandparents get it for you? It's nice to have someone interested in your hobbies. The only one remotely interested in my coins is my youngest who lives half the world away. I try to show my coins to my wife and her eyes kinda glass over. No interest whatsoever.
That is a cool way to become interested in coin collecting. Mine was pure my learning as a kid when I started at 9 years old... no one influenced me. Yes, but remember this was 30 years ago. They have both passed away and nobody in my family or local circle of friends has even the slightest interest in ancient coins. Maybe one day I'll have grandkids and perhaps on of them will be interested.
The coin your grandfather gave you is great and I'd love to have one similar to it but the memories you mentioned brought back some great ones for me. Thank you for reminding me of fond memories.
I'm told my maternal grandfather collected coins, primarily from those he received as payment as a NYC 'trolley car' driver....but all were long gone by the time I was born. It seems I was a self-starter and find VERY few at all interested in any of my coins, except as a source of cash for other things. But one nephew does seem fascinated by them and I hope one day he'll pass them down through the generations.
Congrats on that cool OP-coin (and having awesome Grand-parents) Yah, my Granny was the person that got me interested in coins as well (she would baby-sit me and we'd sift-through her pocket change and her world-collection ... good times)
Yeah, I never had much interaction with my grandparents on either side. My paternal grandfather suffered from alcoholism and my paternal grandmother died when my father was just a baby. Maternal grandparents died when I was too young to have known them. I would like to be a good grandfather to my only grandson, but Poland is a little too far for me to go over every week to spoil him. Perhaps one day he will show an interest in my coins. Time will tell.
we must be about the same age athelred, i was hanging out with my grandparents as a kid about the same time. they didn't collect coins, but i do have an uncle that has collected US coins since the mid 70's. strangely, i had no idea until until just a few years ago. i did swing by his house and check out his coins, but i was a 42 year old kid then. here's my first repulbican....
I knew this was gonna be a trip down memory lane that spanned a few decades, when I saw a title like "my first Roman Republican coin" from @Aethelred the Dead King. Ah, you whippersnapper fortysomethings. I do declare! Turn down that music! And which one of you stole my glasses? I tell you, they had bett- Oh. Never mind. Here they are. Right on my face. Wonder how they got there? Hmph. I think I'll take a nap. (And you think I'm kidding about that last part? Ha! Just watch!) (On second thought, no, please don't watch my nap. That would be kinda creepy.)
My office is full of young punks in their 20's and my wife is a dozen years younger than me, so I feel like a young pup until I happen to glance at a reflection of myself in the mirror!! ... and then I drink, hard, until I'm young again
My wife's eyes do the same thing, too. Not even an Alexander the Great tet made any difference. I mean - strewth, what does it take? Gold maybe?
This is my first and only Roman Republic Denarius to date - L. Cupiennius - 147BC. Purchased from Otago Coins three years ago. My daughter and her fiance appreciate an ancient coin or two. My grandad got me interested in stamps as a 12 year old but I replaced that with coins when I was 14. Stamps just don't give you that history in your hand experience nearly as well as coins do.
Hmmmm... 6 Daughters 23-33; 6 Grandkids 3mos-9yrs; but I am still 21 ! (in my mind... plus 37yrs experience to hone my svelte 21 years). I feel @stevex6 is a young punk, even though he looks sooooo oooooolllddd to me! (LOL, the Steve-Dude is in great shape, keep it up! Congrats, I envy your youth, my Friend!)
