I found a 1984 Lincoln penny that would not fit in a paper penny roll. The coin is the same height but is larger by about 1.5 cm. than a 1984 penny. The finish appears to be steel and has no copper color there is also a black patina that I tried to remove with dishwashing soap and my fingers. There is no mint mark. Everything about the penny is larger, Lincolns head is larger as is all the printing. If anyone can tell me if this is joke or a real coin thanks in advance. /jmc

It sounds like a hammer job. But even if it was an error the value has pretty muched been killed by the way you cleaned it. Cleaning coins is a big no no ;)

Post a photo of it and maybe we can be of more help!!

If it is a hammer job I would expect the details to be muddied if anything the details have been enhanced. /jmc

Sometimes....but at other times it seems to almost put an embossed, or enhanced look to the details.

Especially when the coin is placed between two pieces of leather before being hammered.

Also, coins that have been in a fire sometimes expand and the copper burns off.

1.5 cm larger? That would make it about the diameter of a half dollar.
