can someone identify this coin. my father had it for years, then gave it to me. we never knew what it was or even if it was real, never saw another one until i saw it on an ebay auction my father and i thank all
What's the size? That information will be very helpful in finding the coin among the many pages of 18th Century Austrian issues. Like so many coins of that era, the denomination is determined by its size, not by a legend on the coin. Edited to add: It might be KM#692 if it is in the neighborhood of 43mm. If so, it's a silver thaler from the Hall mint (Dav. X-ref #1053). Weight and fineness are not specified in Krause. Mintage 411,000, $50 VG - $300 XF in the 2002 3rd Ed.
Don't know if this will help....but... http://cgi.ebay.at/CAROLUS-VI-Taler-1721-Hall-AR-vzgl_W0QQitemZ260155093370QQcmdZViewItem
to 2b1ask1 thanks 2b1ask1 that is the coin i have but the site is in Austrian and i cant read it thanks for the reply
Many Chinese copies are mildly magnetic. A silver coin that size should weigh 25-27g depending on fineness, and most Chinese copies are in the 22g range, so you might want to weigh it. If you don't have a scale, compare it with a US silver dollar.
Its a pretty poor copy of a Taler of Karl VI Holy Roman Emperor King of Bohemia and Hungary (1711-1740), authentic one below:
