New coins! They don't have much in common, other than they were both on the list...and they both cost about 30 bucks shipped. Time to scratch some things off the list! fouree Roman Republic, Fourée Denarius imitating L. Thorius Balbus. 2.8g, 19mm, 3h; after 105 BC. Obv.: Head right of Juno Sospita, wearing goat-skin headdress; I. S. M. R. behind. Rev.: L.THORIVS // BALBVS; Bull charging right; S above. Reference: cf. Sear 192; Thoria 1; Cr. 316/1; Syd. 598. From the Doug Smith Collection #387 I guess the ISMR stands for Juno Sospita Mater Regina. This is kind of a double score because I also wanted a Juno "goat head" denarius! Ex. doug...thanks for getting rid of this one! Thanks to JA for the fast service as usual! It will have a nice new home! Lets take another one off the list! Aelius Aelius Caesar, 136-138 AD, AE drachm O: bust r. draped, R: Homonia seated on throne l., holding patera. A cornucopia at her side. Ref. Dattari 2076 BMC 923 Alexandria 33 mm, 22.1g This is is pretty rough, but it's really not that bad for the type. I can't afford a nice example....but 30 bucks for this one was pretty sweet really. If you have trouble remember who this guy is like i did, he was one of Hadrian's pics (not first i guess?) to be his successor and was elevated to caesar, but didn't live long enough to be augustus. He died unexpectedly but of natural caused before that time after returning to Rome. He's son did get to be emperor for a bit with Marcus Aurelius..... Lucius Verus (also died on a return trip to Rome, disease). Post any related coins you want!
nice pair!...huh...i wonder if this could a coin of him(Aelius) too....i've yet to identify this coin with any accuracy View attachment 635327
Congrats. It's a great feeling to cross long wanted coins off that want list. JA has helped me mark off more than a few from my want list.
A number of the coins I sent to the JAZ adoption agency were fourrees simply because I had way too many both from long ago and the recent AK lot from Triton XX. When they are gone, they are gone. I still have this type in silver. I'm glad there are people who share with me the interest in the unofficial coins. Believe me I am keeping many more especially of types I do not have in solid. My well worn Aelius once was only worth half of yours since it is a 12.56g hemidrachm. Yes, it was considerably over $30.
Yep, It's always a great feeling to 'cross another off the list' ....and at bargain prices!!! I seem to have deleted my Aelius denarius...so I'll pile on with my L.T. Balbus denarius instead...
A good deal and a great deal... sweet!! My Aelius (RIC 436a (Hadrian)) has some unsightly black that I would like to deal with... any suggestions?
Neat fourree, and the Aelius seems to have a nicely chunky appearance. (Edit- 33mm? Wow, no wonder. So essentially a sestertius sized piece, then. Cool!)
Fourree: I've never bought a coin sold as one, but NGC said one of my Vitellius denarii was "plated", which would seem to indicate a fourree if true. I saw no signs of visible flaws that might indicate plating. Aelius. The only one I've had, from my 2007-08 collection. I'm ashamed to admit I can't remember whether this was an As or a sestertius. I think the latter? This coin likely had a good bit of smoothing done but I liked it for the nice portrait, which was (and remains) my primary criterion in Roman Imperial coins. Clear name in the legends, too. That was (and remains) my #2 criterion.
