rrdenarius => that is an amazingly fantastic family shot!! (I love it)

My oldest brother refuses to get into any photos (he's actually the guy that will get angry and destroy old photos) ...... not sure what he'll do nowadays because of digital (I'd better protect my camera)

Here is a group photo taken last year:

Here is (my grandfather's) watch that I'm wearing today:
    Watch photo.JPG

I bought a watch in Japan circa 1980. The sales clerk asked if I wanted it set to Tokyo time & of course my answer was "yes". She took the watch & returned about five minutes later.

Every hour on the Japan radio, there was a series of tones that indicated the exact time. When I heard the radio tones the next day I watched the second hand on my watch click on the 12 precisely when the tone sounded. The sales clerk had set the watch exactly to Tokyo time.

How do you adjust that for DST? Does it connect via USB?

I purchased a watch when I first visited China in the late 80's. The hours were all Chinese characters. Purdy cool. I still have have the 35 RMB price tag on it! That was HUGE money for an average worker then.

It was illegal to own Chinese RMB at that time. I was holding FEC (Chinese Foreign Exchange Currency and Hong Kong Dollars). Bought it with HKD as they were worth 20% more to the Chinese on a one-to-one basis ( hey, he got a 20% tip!). He gave me change in RMB. It was a score against "The Man" as I pocketed the change and carried it home to the US. Big win for the time!

I will post it when we leave the hospital.

@Alegandron and @Collect89 Most people might not realize this, but China actually has some luxury watch brands that sell watches in the $300-$600 range which are easily comparable to many mid-range $1000+ Swiss watches. Same with Japan. Seiko has many Japan-only watches in the $400-$1,200 range that are comparable or beat many Swiss watches that are twice as expensive. And the Grand Seikos at $3000 to $4000 are superior to a $7000 Rolex.

Heck, I have an Orient Star (the luxury brand for Orient watches, which is also part of Seiko). I have no problem saying that my $500 Orient Star is superior to my $750 Rado, and definitely also superior to my $1000 Hamilton (both Swiss watches) when it comes to fit and finish and design.

I know the Swiss have the fancy marketing budgets, but the Asians are expert watch makers and have a watch making tradition just as rich as the Swiss.

Yes, you'll find some crappy $30 or $40 Chinese watches, and many Chinese fakes of Swiss watches that are poorly made, and they falsely give people the opinion that such junk represent all that Asia has to offer as far as watches, but that view is far from accurate for those of us who study horology.

PS: You know who else makes superior watches at great bang for your buck? The Germans. Look at brands like Stowa, etc.

PS: I own a Bostok (Soviet era watch). Like anything Soviet, it wasn't the prettiest, and it definitely wasn't the best fit and finish, and one could swear it was probably made from metal from recycled 1950's Soviet cars and tanks...and maybe even recycled AK-47s. But as rough as it is, that watch could probably survive a nuclear strike and keep on working. All it needs is to be popped open every 10 years and have a dash of oil applied to the movement.

I may not survive the nuclear strike myself, but if I'm wearing that Soviet watch on Armageddon day, I have no doubt it will still be telling accurate time days after I've been nuked to medium well.

Unfortunately, my earlier visits in China were when they literally were a Third World country. They made NO quality-made products for the world consumer market place. We taught our several partner factories virtually everything. In the 80s-90s, consumer products capitalization and development in China were focused on entry level products created by low-cost labor. Through the 2000's, Engineers, Production, and Business Management began graduating from Chinese Universities, enabling Chinese manufacturing to truly begin to compete in consumer products. Prior to that, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, some Korea companies would expatriate key personnel into China to start up and/or run companies. Since the 2000s, China began focusing on upscaling quality manufacturing. Don't let anyone kid anyone: I have seen quality manufacturing facilities that not only RIVAL any that I have seen in the West, but several I have seen that are World Class and BETTER than any in the West. They did this within one generation. An amazing feat!

Speaking of gray hairs. I noticed 2 gray hairs on my beard last night, so I'm now going clean shaven. If I can't see the gray hairs, I ain't getting old. At least that's what I'm going with.

My son was a little taken aback by my sudden clean shaven appearance (I've been rocking a light beard for 7 months). He said "Daddy, you look goofy, can't you glue your face hair back?"

Family photo before I return them to the bank. Small family compared to most. I just could not get myself to put them in a pile, although they would have looked cooler. Hard to get uniform exposure across all the different tones.

Well, here is my newest Seiko. A SARB017 Alpinist, for the Japanese Domestic Market only. So much class and elegance for only $389, with saphire crystal, waterproof to 200M, and mechanical automatic movement. Too bad they don't sell anything that nice at that price in the US, but luckily we can get them from Japan.

Thanks, but still small. Although it will grow by two shortly. It is missing the Anatolian dirhem and the Philip I which is coming back home. I have filled my Abafils and can probably only fit one more in the safety deposit box without getting a bigger box. I thought I would pause for a bit, but I have a winning bid still out there in the next CNG and my hand may get forced. There are worse problems to have, I know.

LOL I was just searching on Ed Waddell's site for more Abafil cases. I have the one that perfectly fits my 12 Caesars collection. Now that I have more than 40 coins it might be time to upgrade my storage methods. The rest of my collection are in flips in a red box. I would like something that actually allow me to display them. I was also looking at the Volterra display boxes, but they look a bit cheap. I love the look of the Abafil cases and trays.

You are right, this is definitely a first world problem.
