1857 flying eagle cent error?

As with most any coin, connecting with the "right" buyer is paramount, but is even more important with something like this. The fact is that a lot of collectors will not want anything to do with it, even with the historical value, which means you've an item with a comparatively small market. Getting in front of as many eyes as is possible would be your best bet, if selling yourself, and you also wish to achieve the highest price possible. I'm not sure how eBay would treat such a thing these days, but perhaps a black box over the offending letter (or another so that said word isn't clear) would be acceptable while adding a slyly written description.

I had a few of these over the years and can say with great confidence that you're not looking at a great deal of money, even in the best case scenario. I do believe, if memory serves me, the last one I had was sold on eBay maybe ten years ago, and went somewhere around $20 in the end.

I personally don't see why anyone wouldn't respect your opinion, and in fact, you're an excellent example of the very type of person I mentioned in my earlier post. It's a very niche item and isn't something that will appeal to the majority, so if anything, you're in very good company.

The OP's coin could be placed into the same general category as gold plated 1883 "no cents" V nickels. There's nothing stopping someone from making either one 20-30 years ago (or whatever) or even today, so there is no definitive historical connection, and most collectors have no interest in plunking down the money to buy such a thing, but there are always the exceptions. If someone likes and/or wishes to collect them, who am I to judge? At the very least there was a little hand-skill involved in making it, which is more than can be said for certain modern altered "fantasy" copies which are widely collected. To each his or her own.

 

actually, it has lots of tell tale signs of cleaning. You asked for opinions. Don't dismiss the opinions out of hand, especially when they are correct.

I won the coin on an online auction, it was 3 different flying eagle cents & after winning I went back to look at them and saw that the coin said "c*nt", instead of "cent".
Did I like this? NO. But I didn't get offended either because I'm not a sensitive person. Logic.... Anyways. Thanks for your responses everyone.
